GOSHEN, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University baseball traveled north to Goshen (Ind.) today and won both ends of a doubleheader to win three of four games in the series with the Maple Leafs. The two teams split a DH at Wildcat Field Friday night.
Indiana Wesleyan won the opening game on Saturday by a 3-2 margin and then opened up a big victory in the final game with an 11-3 final.
Game one starting pitcher Bryan Beachy (JR/Kokomo, Ind.) gave up single runs in the first and third innings as Indiana Wesleyan fell behind 2-0. But Indiana Wesleyan struck back in the fifth inning with three runs to gain a 3-2 lead they would not surrender.
In that fifth inning, Logan Tomlinson (FR/Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) singled and Caleb Birkey (SO/Granger, Ind.) doubled to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Trey Shigley (JR/Bartlesville, Okla.) hit an RBI single and he then stole second base to again put two runners in scoring position. Preston Fugita (JR/Littleton, Colo.) hit into a ground out but Birkey scored on the play to tie the score 2-2. Cam Screeton followed with an RBI single for the game-winning hit.
Beachy was credited with the win as he allowed two runs on seven hits in 6.0 innings. Kennan Barnett (FR/Newburgh, Ind.) pitched the seventh inning to earn the save. Barnett got a fly out to right field to end the game with the tying run on second base.
Cam Screeton hit 3-for-4 with one RBI in the win while Birkey was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
The second game was much different as the Wildcats led 6-0 after three times to bat to cruise to the victory. A four run fourth inning put the Wildcats up 10-2.
Freshman Brandon Watkins (FR/Indianapolis, Ind.) was the recipient of the offensive explosion as he earned the complete game victory. He allowed one earned run on six hits with three strikeouts.
Screeton was 3-for-4 for the second time on Saturday as he had six hits in all. Screeton scored three times in game two. Jack Collingsworth, Jr. (SO/Apple Valley Calif.) and Phil Lougheed each finished 2-for-4 as Collingsworth walked, scored twice, and had one RBI while Lougheed knocked in three. Craig Nesselhuf (SO/Littleton, Colo.) was 1-for-2 with four RBI.
Indiana Wesleyan begins a new series with Saint Francis (Ind.) on Tuesday. The teams play a doubleheader at Wildcat Field at 4 p.m.
