MARION, Ind. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University baseball team celebrated Senior Day in style with a sweep of Crossroads League leader and No. 17-ranked Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) at Wildcat Field.
Pitching keyed the huge doubleheader sweep for Indiana Wesleyan with a final score of 4-1 in both games. Bryan Beachy (JR/Kokomo, Ind.) and Matt Blankenship (SO/Cincinnati, Ohio) each threw complete games and allowed a combined two runs on seven hits.
Indiana Wesleyan (18-30, 15-17 CL) also defeated the top two starting pitchers for Mount Vernon Nazarene in Lucas Daugherty and Mike Kochheiser. Daugherty is second in the Crossroads League with a 1.84 ERA while Kochheiser is fourth at 1.93. The duo entered play today with a perfect 16-0 record as both suffered their first defeat of the season.
In the opening game, Beachy and Daugherty were locked in a scoreless game until the fifth inning. MVNU put the first run on the board with a squeeze bunt for the 1-0 lead. Indiana Wesleyan took advantage of two miscues by Mount Vernon Nazarene in the bottom of the fifth inning to score four runs. Preston Fugita (JR/Littleton, Colo.) had the big hit in the inning with a two-run single up the middle for a 2-1 lead. Later in the inning, AJ Harris (SO/Temecula, Calif.) provided insurance with a two-out, two run single for a 4-1 score.
Beachy closed out the game for the victory, his third of the season. He gave up four hits and three walks and struck out four.
Indiana Wesleyan outhit Mount Vernon Nazarene 7-4 in the game as Harris was the only player on either side with two hits. Cam Screeton reached base twice with a single and a walk.
Blankenship matched Beachy with a stellar performance in game two. Fugita and the offense provided enough offense to back Blankenship’s gem.
Fugita hit an RBI single in the third inning and Screeton followed with a sac fly to center field as the Wildcats led 2-0. The Cougars scored their only run of the game on a wild play in the fourth inning. Anthony Clark led off the MVNU inning with a walk. He was running on the pitch that was grounded out to third base and he rounded second and took third on the throw across the diamond. Clark noticed no one covering the plate and got up and raced home for the run.
The Wildcats constructed a two out rally in the fifth inning. Fugita and Screeton started the rally with singles to put runners on the corner. Screeton stole second base and Cody Calvert (JR/Godfrey, Ill.) drove both of them home with a single through the hole at short for a 4-1 lead.
The Cougars (37-8, 27-5 CL) threatened in the seventh inning as they loaded the bases with two outs. With the tying run on first base, Blankenship induced a ground ball to third base as Craig Nesselhuf (SO/Littleton, Colo.) fielded it cleanly and stepped on third to complete the sweep.
Blankenship allowed one run on three hits and two walks in 7.0 innings. He struck out two Cougars to improve to 5-3 on the season. Fugita was 3-for-3 in the game with a run and a RBI as the Wildcats outhit the Cougars 7-3.
