UPLAND, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University baseball fell in both ends of a doubleheader today at Taylor (Ind.) in Upland, Indiana. Taylor won the opener 4-1 and the nightcap by a 9-0 score.
In game one, Indiana Wesleyan struck right away with a run in the top of the first inning. Jack Collingsworth, Jr. (SO/Apple Valley Calif.) hit into a groundout that scored Preston Fugita (JR/Littleton, Colo.) for a 1-0 lead. Unfortunately for IWU, it was their only run of the day.
Indiana Wesleyan starting pitcher Justin Sovine (JR/Wadsworth, Ohio) allowed a first inning run to Taylor and the 1-1 score remained until the fifth inning. TU scored the game winner in the fifth inning and added two insurance runs in the sixth inning to chase Sovine and close the scoring in game one.
Sovine finished the game with four runs -- three earned -- on six hits in 5.1 innings. Kennan Barnett (FR/Newburgh, Ind.) came in to relieve in the sixth inning and was perfect in two-thirds of an inning.
Fugita accounted for half of the Indiana Wesleyan hits with a 3-for-3 performance and one stolen base. Cody Calvert (JR/Godfrey, Ill.), AJ Harris (SO/Temecula, Calif.), and Phillip Lougheed (SR/Swartz Creek, Mich.) each had a single.
In the final game of the season series, the Trojans scored six runs in the first inning and cruised to a 9-0 victory. The Wildcats committed three errors in the game and seven of the nine Trojan runs were unearned.
Offensively, the Wildcats earned four hits in the game. Fugita, Logan Tomlinson (FR/Trabuco Canyon, Calif.), Collingsworth, and Lougheed all had singles in the contest.
Indiana Wesleyan will host their home finale at 1 p.m. on Saturday against #17 Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio). Senior Day will be celebrated in a pregame ceremony.
