HUNTINGTON, Ind. -- Freshman starting pitcher Brandon Watkins (FR/Indianapolis, Ind.) allowed one run on four hits in a complete game effort as Indiana Wesleyan University baseball won the second game of a doubleheader at Huntington (Ind.) by a 7-1 score. Huntington won the first game 4-2.
The second game’s first run did not come until the fifth inning when Phillip Lougheed (SR/Swartz Creek, Mich.) lofted a sac fly to center with no outs and the bases loaded. Caleb Birkey (SO/Granger, Ind.) followed with an RBI double and a Preston Fugita (JR/Littleton, Colo.) RBI single put Indiana Wesleyan in the lead 3-0.
Huntington finally figured out Watkins in the bottom of the fifth inning with one run on two hits. But Watkins regrouped and allowed just one more hit the rest of the game.
Indiana Wesleyan provided more insurance runs for Watkins with two runs in each the sixth and seventh innings. Craig Nesselhuf (SO/Littleton, Colo.) scored on a wild pitch and Birkey scored on a fielder’s choice in the sixth inning while in the seventh inning Nesselhuf provided a RBI single and the second run came across the plate on an HU error.
IWU had 11 hits in the win with Cam Screeton, Logan Tomlinson (FR/Trabuco Canyon, Calif.), and Nesselhuf all adding two hits apiece. Tomlinson reached base four times as he drew two walks and Birkey was 1-for-2 with a walk, a double, and two runs scored.
In game two, the Wildcats struck first with a two run second inning. Trey Shigley (JR/Bartlesville, Okla.) plated a run with a bases loaded single and the second run scored on a Fugita sac fly. The lead did not last long as IWU starting pitcher Bryan Beachy (JR/Kokomo, Ind.) surrendered three runs on four hits and two errors. The Foresters added one more run in the fourth inning for a 4-2 lead.
Jack Collingsworth, Jr. (SO/Apple Valley Calif.) singled to load the bases with two outs in the seventh inning to put the tying run in scoring position. Cody Calvert (JR/Godfrey, Ill.) stepped to the plate but grounded out to third to end the rally and the game.
Collingsworth, Jr. accounted for half of the Wildcat hits in the loss as he finished 2-for-4. Shigley was 1-for-2 with a walk and one RBI while Nesselhuf added a single and a run scored.
Beachy took the loss on the mound with four runs -- three earned -- in a 6.0 inning complete game. He gave up eight hits and one walk while striking out two Foresters.
Indiana Wesleyan returns to action at 4:30 p.m. on Monday against Taylor (Ind.). The games will be played at Wildcat Field.
