MARION, Ind. -- Bethel (Ind.) swept a doubleheader from Indiana Wesleyan University baseball today at Wildcat Field.
Bethel won the opening game 4-3 and then completed the sweep with a 6-3 victory. BC ends the season series with Indiana Wesleyan with three wins in four games.
In the opening game, Indiana Wesleyan struck first with one first run inning. Cam Screeton doubled to left-center field and scored on a Jack Collingsworth, Jr. (SO/Apple Valley Calif.) single. Bethel claimed a 2-1 lead in the top of the second inning with two runs on two hits. IWU tied the score at 2-2 in the third inning on a Collingsworth, Jr. RBI double off the left field wall.
Bethel scored two runs in the sixth inning to gain a 4-2 lead. The eventual winning run came on a double steal attempt. The lead runner scored just before the Pilot runner was tagged out between first and second base.
Logan Tomlinson (FR/Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) connected on a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning to trim the deficit to 4-3. Indiana Wesleyan threatened to tie the game in the last of the seventh inning on a two out rally. After the first two Wildcats were retired, Preston Fugita (JR/Littleton, Colo.) singled and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. But Screeton grounded out to second base to end the threat and the game.
Matt Blankenship (SO/Cincinnati, Ohio) took the loss with four runs -- three earned -- on six hits in 6.0+ innings pitched. He walked five and struck out three.
The top of the order did the most damage for Indiana Wesleyan as the top three hitters combined to go 6-for-11 with three runs scored and two RBI. Fugita, Screeton, and Collingsworth, Jr. all finished with two hits.
The Pilots scored early and often in game two, chasing Wildcat starting pitcher Cody Jones (SR/Hartford City, Ind.) with two outs in the third inning. By the time the third inning came to a close the Pilots held a 6-1 lead. The IWU runs came in the second inning when AJ Harris (SO/Temecula, Calif.) ripped a double to deep left-center field to score Cody Calvert (JR/Godfrey, Ill.) from first base.
The Wildcats rallied in the fifth inning with two runs on two hits. Cam Screeton singled to left field with the bases loaded to score Trey Shigley (JR/Bartlesville, Okla.) and Caleb Birkey (SO/Granger, Ind.) to cut the deficit in half at 6-3. Calvert stepped to the plate as the tying run as two runners were on but struck out swinging to end the frame.
IWU threatened again in the seventh inning with two runners on base to chase the Pilot starting pitcher. Andrew Withlow was the new BC pitcher and he induced a fly ball to center field to end the game.
Jones took the loss as he gave up six runs -- three earned -- in 2.2 innings. He gave up six hits and three walks while striking out one. Marcus Price (FR/Hartford City, Ind.) was excellent in relief as he did not allow a run in 4.1 innings. He allowed two hits and no walks with four strikeouts.
Indiana Wesleyan returns to action again tomorrow as they plays Huntington (Ind.) at 5 p.m. at Wildcat Field.
