MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University and Bethel (Ind.) played a doubleheader on Saturday in Mishawaka, Indiana. Bethel captured a 6-1 win in the opening game while Indiana Wesleyan came back from four runs down to win the nightcap 9-6.
In game two, Indiana Wesleyan quickly went ahead with a pair of RBI singles from Craig Nesselhuf (SO/Littleton, Colo.) and Phillip Lougheed (SR/Swartz Creek, Mich.) for the 2-0 lead. Bethel tied the score in the home half of the first inning and then plated four runs in the second inning to lead 6-2.
Indiana Wesleyan matched the four run inning in the third inning to tie the score 6-6. Logan Tomlinson (FR/Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) started the damage with a 2-run double followed by an RBI fielder’s choice off the bat of Preston Fugita (JR/Littleton, Colo.) and an RBI single by Cam Screeton.
Indiana Wesleyan struck again in the fourth inning when Caleb Birkey (SO/Granger, Ind.) drilled a 2-run double for the 8-6 advantage. Tomlinson once again drove in a run on a sac fly in the sixth inning for a 9-6 lead.
Marcus Price (FR/Hartford City, Ind.) entered the game in the second inning in relief of starting pitcher Brandon Watkins (FR/Indianapolis, Ind.). Price pitched through the sixth inning to earn the win while Kennan Barnett (FR/Newburgh, Ind.) pitched the seventh inning to collect the save.
Bethel put up a pair of quick runs in game two to lead 2-0 after one inning of play. Indiana Wesleyan cut the deficit in half in the fourth inning on a Tomlinson RBI single. But Bethel scored one more run in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth inning for the 6-1 victory.
Bryan Beachy (JR/Kokomo, Ind.) took the loss as he gave up six runs in 5.2 innings of work. Barnett pitched the final 1.1 innings.
Indiana Wesleyan and Bethel will complete the season series at 4 p.m. on Tuesday. The doubleheader will be contested at Wildcat Field.
