Saint Francis Takes Two against IWU Baseball

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Pitching dominated play today in a Saint Francis (Ind.) doubleheader sweep of Indiana Wesleyan baseball in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Indiana Wesleyan had swept Saint Francis on Tuesday and came into play today with wins in eight of their last nine games. But Indiana Wesleyan lost a pair of tight contests by scores of 3-1 and 1-0.

The Wildcats scored the first run of the day in the fourth inning of game one on a Logan Tomlinson (FR/Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) RBI single to score courtesy runner Trey Shigley (JR/Bartlesville, Okla.). That would be the only run of the day for the Wildcats. Justin Sovine (JR/Wadsworth, Ohio) did not allow a run until the fifth inning when the Cougars scored three runs for a 3-1 lead.

IWU outhit USF 6-4 in the game with six different Wildcats gaining a hit. Preston Fugita (JR/Littleton, Colo.), Cam Screeton, AJ Harris (SO/Temecula, Calif.), and Caleb Birkey (SO/Granger, Ind.) all reached base twice with a hit and a walk. Sovine took the loss as he allowed three runs on four hits in 6.0 innings. He walked three and struck out five Cougars.

Pitching dominated even more in game two as USF pulled out the 1-0 victory. The only run came in the bottom of the first inning when Jake Worrell surrendered an unearned run. Worrell gave up just three hits and two walks in the complete game while striking out three hitters.

Indiana Wesleyan outhit Saint Francis in the second game as well by a 4-3 margin. Tomlinson had a double and a walk while Fugita, Screeton, and Harris all contributed singles.

The Wildcats fall to 14-20 on the season and 11-7 in Crossroads League games. The Cougars improve to 8-21 and 4-8 in league action.

Indiana Wesleyan begins their next series on Saturday with Bethel (Ind.). The doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. at Bethel in Mishawaka, Indiana.
