INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University baseball claimed their first doubleheader sweep of the season on Tuesday as they defeated host Marian (Ind.) 6-3 in both games of the doubleheader in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The Wildcats improve to 9-17 on the season and 6-4 in Crossroads League games. In their first four league doubleheaders, the Wildcats had split each of them. The Knights fall to 7-12 and 5-7 in league play following the two losses. The two teams split a doubleheader on Monday as IWU won three of four games in the series.
Indiana Wesleyan never trailed in the first game. IWU scored two runs in the third and fourth innings in for the 4-0. IWU tacked on single runs in the fifth and seventh innings to lead 6-0.
Matt Blankenship (SO/Cincinnati, Ohio) took a shutout into the seventh inning as only five Knights reached base. But he struggled in the seventh inning and was pulled for Marcus Price (FR/Hartford City, Ind.) with three runs in and runners on first and second base. But Price earned the save as catcher Cody Calvert (JR/Godfrey, Ill.) picked off a Knight at first base and then a fly ball to center field ended the game.
Blankenship ended the day with three runs on seven hits in 6.1 innings. He walked two and struck out five.
Preston Fugita (JR/Littleton, Colo.) was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, two RBI, and a stolen base. Logan Tomlinson (FR/Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) finished 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored while courtesy runner Trey Shigley (JR/Bartlesville, Okla.) stole a pair of bases and scored one time.
Trailing 2-1 in the fifth inning of game two, Indiana Wesleyan regained a 3-2 lead on a two run single by Fugita. IWU added insurance runs in the seventh inning with three runs for a 6-2 advantage. Cam Screeton and Jacob Murphy (JR/Hudsonville, Mich.) each delivered RBI singles while Calvert lofted a sac fly to account for the three Wildcat runs.
Marian had the first three hitters reach base in the bottom of the seventh inning which chased Kennan Barnett (FR/Newburgh, Ind.) from the game. Craig Nesselhuf (SO/Littleton, Colo.) came in to pitch in a save situation with no outs and the bases loaded. The first batter singled to score one run as IWU clung on to a 6-3 lead. But Nesselhuf induced a fly out to left field, then earned a strikeout, and ended the game with a fly ball to right field for the victory.
Bryan Beach was the winning pitcher as he allowed nine hits and three walks in 4.1 innings. One of the two runs he gave up was earned.
Marian outhit Indiana Wesleyan 15-8 in the game. Seven of the eight IWU hits were singles as Calvert had a double for the only extra base hit. Fugita completed a great day at the plate as he was 2-for-2 in game two with two walks, two runs scored, and two RBI. Screeton was 2-for-4 with one RBI and Calvert was 1-for-2 with two RBI.
