MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University baseball completed a doubleheader split with Grace (Ind.) for the second time in as many days. IWU won the opener 14-3 and then lost the nightcap 9-5.

It was the first Indiana Wesleyan game at Wildcat Field in 2014 but IWU was the away team on Friday. The games were scheduled for play in Winona Lake today but the Grace field was unplayable. So the games were moved to Marion and Grace remained the home team.

The Wildcat bats came alive in the opening contest as IWU won 14-3. The Wildcats outhit the Lancers 15-6 and were led by Cam Screeton and his 4-for-4 performance. All but two of the Wildcat hits were singles.

The Wildcats plated four runs in the top of the first inning which would be a sign of things to come. The Lancers responded with three runs in the second inning but the Wildcats would blow it open over the next three innings. IWU scored three runs in each the third and fourth innings and capped it with four runs in the fifth inning for the 14-3 advantage.

Screeton had four hits along with four RBI to pace the bats. Preston Fugita (JR/Littleton, Colo.), AJ Harris (SO/Temecula, Calif.), and Logan Tomlinson (FR/Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) all had two hits in the win while Cody Calvert (JR/Godfrey, Ill.) went 1-for-3 with three walks. Trey Shigley (JR/Bartlesville, Okla.), Tomlinson, and Caleb Birkey (SO/Granger, Ind.) each knocked in two runs.

Justin Sovine (JR/Wadsworth, Ohio) earned the win on the mound as he surrendered three runs in 6.0 innings of work. He gave up four hits and one walk to go along with four strikeouts. Jon Keesling (SO/Selma, Ind.) pitched the final inning and did not give up a run.

Kennan Barnett (FR/Newburgh, Ind.) suffered the loss in game two. He lasted 2.1 innings but was the recipient of some bad luck as all six runs he gave up were unearned. Three IWU errors in the second inning led to the six runs being scored in the frame.

Indiana Wesleyan looked to have all the momentum early in game two with a 3-0 lead after two innings. But the three errors in the bottom of the second led to six Grace runs for a 6-3 score. IWU closed the gap to 7-5 in the top of the sixth inning with the tying run at bat but would get no closer. Grace got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth inning and closed out the game for the 9-5 outcome.

Fugita had two of the eight IWU hits in the game and he also scored one run. Birkey finished 1-for-3 with a run and two RBI while Trey Shigley collected two stolen bases.

Indiana Wesleyan postponed its doubleheader set for tomorrow afternoon with Marian (Ind.) due to the incoming weather. The games will now be played at 4 p.m. on Monday at Wildcat Field.
