CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University baseball had a successful afternoon as they swept Roosevelt (Ill.) in a doubleheader played at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana. The IWU home game was moved to Wabash College as Wildcat Field is not ready for action yet.
Indiana Wesleyan defeated Roosevelt 3-1 in the opening game and completed the sweep with a 4-3 victory in 9 innings. IWU improves to 3-12 on the season.
The Wildcats never trailed in the opener as they scored the first two runs in the fourth inning. Jack Collingsworth, Jr. (SO/Apple Valley Calif.) scored on an overthrow to first base on an AJ Harris (SO/Temecula, Calif.) batted ball. Collingsworth, Jr. would come around to score from second base. Harris then scored on a pick-off attempt that found its way into the outfield grass for a 2-0 lead.
Collingsworth, Jr. would figure in another Wildcat run in the fifth inning. He clubbed an RBI single for a 3-0 advantage. Roosevelt got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning but that would be it as IWU won 3-1.
Matt Blankenship (SO/Cincinnati, Ohio) earned the victory on the mound. He was backed by Collingsworth, Jr. and Cam Screeton with two hits apiece. Screeton and Caleb Birkey (SO/Granger, Ind.) each stole two bases.
In game two, Roosevelt scored first with a run in the top of the first. IWU tied it and then gained the lead in the fifth inning. Birkey laid down a sac bunt to move Screeton to third base but the throw to first was wild allowing Screeton to score the tying run. Jacob Murphy (JR/Hudsonville, Mich.) followed with an RBI single for a 2-1 lead.
Roosevelt tied the score in the sixth inning and then took a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh inning. Indiana Wesleyan responded in the home half of the seventh inning on a squeeze play by Harris to score Logan Tomlinson (FR/Trabuco Canyon, Calif.). In extra innings, Tomlinson led off the ninth with a triple and scored on a RBI single by Harris for the walk-off victory.
