GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University baseball team was able to play once again when they rescheduled a three-game series at Cornerstone (Mich.) in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The first of those two games were played on Thursday and Indiana Wesleyan lost both by scores of 8-2 and 3-0.
Tomorrow the series will conclude with a single 9-inning game. First pitch will be at 12 noon.
Cornerstone scored first in the opening game with a two-run 2nd inning. IWU cut that lead in half with a run in the third when Preston Fugita (JR/Littleton, Colo.) (JR, Littleton, Colo.) hit an RBI groundout. But Cornerstone blew the game wide open in the fourth inning as they scored five times to lead 7-1.
Trey Shigley (JR/Bartlesville, Okla.) (JR, Bartlesville, Okla.) led off the fifth inning with a double and stole third base. Jacob Murphy (JR/Hudsonville, Mich.) (JR, Hudsonville, Mich.) then made contact to score Shigley on a groundout to make it a 7-2 game. Cornerstone would complete the scoring with one more run in the sixth for the 8-2 final score.
In game two, Indiana Wesleyan and Cornerstone were scoreless through four innings. Cornerstone finally got on the board in the fifth inning with a two-out home run to lead 1-0. CU then took advantage of some IWU errors in the sixth inning to score two more runs and lead 3-0 heading into the final inning.
Indiana Wesleyan threatened in the seventh inning as two runners reached when Craig Nesselhuf (SO/Littleton, Colo.) (SO, Littleton, Colo.) singled and Logan Tomlinson (FR/Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) (FR, Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) reached on an error with one out. With two outs Cody Calvert (JR/Godfrey, Ill.) (JR, Godfrey, Ill.) walked to load the bases and put the tying run on first base. But Shigley grounded out to end the game as the Golden Eagles won 3-0.
Bryan Beachy (JR/Kokomo, Ind.) (JR, Kokomo, Ind.) took the loss on the mound for the Wildcats. He pitched a complete game and allowed just one earned run.
