“This was a total team win,” said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Steve Brooks. “I think we won it by getting some stops and we made some timely plays there at the end where we were able to break free and get some easy baskets. That was something we were unable to do against them all game.”
Indiana Wesleyan easily defeated Marian 71-33 in the teams’ first meeting this year on January 4 in Indianapolis.
“This is not the same team we played earlier,” continued Brooks. “We got a good win and I’m glad for our seniors that they had a chance to win on their day. Now we need to regroup and get ready for the tournament.”
Three seniors played their final regular season home game in Luckey Arena today. Following the game, Brooks spoke about each of the three seniors -- Lindsay Dager, Taylor Goshert, and Abby Reinke -- in a postgame ceremony.
Brooks said, “You can’t say enough about seniors, especially Taylor who has been here for five years. She came back and gave us the leadership we needed on a young team like this. That has helped us have the kind of year that we have had so far.”
“Abby and Lindsay are kids that make their teammates better,” Brooks continued. “Nobody knows that because they don’t see us in practice. They are just wonderful, wonderful teammates and great leaders that the younger players look up to. We are going to miss them dearly.”
The victory secures a tie for second place with Huntington (Ind.) in the final Crossroads League standings. The two teams tied with 14-4 league records. Huntington wins the tie-breaker with Indiana Wesleyan as HU will be the No. 2-seed in next week’s Crossroads League Tournament while Indiana Wesleyan is the third seed.
Indiana Wesleyan will host No. 6-seed Bethel (Ind.) at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the Crossroads League Tournament Quarterfinals.
