SAUGET, Ill. -- Indiana Wesleyan University baseball completed its two day series today at No. 4-ranked Missouri Baptist at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois.
Missouri Baptist (7-3), an NAIA World Series team a season ago, defeated Indiana Wesleyan in both ends of today’s doubleheader by scores of 5-1 and 12-2. Missouri Baptist won the only game played yesterday for the three-game sweep.
The Spartans struck first in the opener with a pair of runs in the first inning. Wildcat starting pitcher Bryan Beachy then settled down and allowed another run in the fourth and two more in the fifth. The Wildcats scored their run in the top of the sixth on an RBI groundout off the bat of Caleb Birkey.
Beachy allowed 5 runs (4 earned) in 6 innings for a complete game. He gave up 9 hits and 2 walks. Jack Collingsworth, Jr. produced two of the seven Indiana Wesleyan hits in the game while Trey Shigley reached base twice with a hit and a walk.
Indiana Wesleyan (0-3) twice captured leads in game two before losing 12-2. IWU scored a run in the first inning on an RBI single from Collingsworth, Jr. Missouri Baptist tied the score 1-1 in the home half of the first before Indiana Wesleyan regained a 2-1 lead in the top of the third. Cam Screeton hit a sac fly for the IWU 2-1 lead.
Missouri Baptist then scored seven runs in the bottom of the third and scored at least one run in the next three innings. The 10 run lead through 7 innings brought the 9-inning game to a halt.
Indiana Wesleyan will not play again until March 3 when the team is in Tucson, Arizona for the Tucson Invitational. IWU battles Northwestern (Iowa) in a double header in their first games out west.
