Box Score MARION, Ind. -- No. 1-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University men’s basketball continued its dominant start to the 2014-15 season as they cruised to a 104-71 victory over visiting Judson (Ill.) on Wednesday night in Luckey Arena.
Indiana Wesleyan has scored more than 100 points in three straight games and has surpassed the century mark in four of eight games this season. The four 100 point games are the most in the Greg Tonagel era.
The Wildcats continue to shoot the ball well as they hit 50.7-percent (37 of 73) from the field today and had a better than 2-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio.
“Our assists-to-turnovers were 24-to-11 as that is something we have been harping on all week,” stated Tonagel. “We came in averaging 17 turnovers and a lot of that has been coming from our post. Our three posts today who played significant time were 6-to-3.”
Judson on the other hand was 12-to-24 on assist-to-turnovers. Judson was also limited to just 56 shot attempts, 17 less than Indiana Wesleyan. IWU out-rebounded Judson 45-31 and pulled down 21 offensive rebounds.
“We had offensive rebounds on 58-percent of our misses today which is an extremely high number,” said Tonagel. “We came in averaging about 36.5-percent. That gives us extra opportunities and it deflates the defense. Tonight we really relied upon it.”
The Wildcats continue to spread the ball around on the offensive end. Five Wildcats scored double figures, including two off the bench. Lane Mahurin (SO/Rockville, Ind.) scored a game-high 19 points, Josh Mawhorr (JR/Muncie, Ind.) added 17 points, and DJ Bettering scored 14 points. Off the bench, Bob Peters (SO/Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) contributed 16 points and Jacob Johnson (FR/Mooresville, Ind.) earned a career-high 14 points.
“He’s a special kid,” Tonagel said of Johnson. “He keeps getting better and more comfortable. He does a lot more than score as he does a lot of things defensively and gets on the glass.”
Jonny Marlin (JR/Greenwood, Ind.) did not attempt a shot tonight but contributed 10 assists and three steals. Zac Vandewater (SR/Warsaw, Ind.) scored eight points and Aaron Murray (SO/Louisville, Ky.) tied a career-best with seven points.
Indiana Wesleyan will next play on Tuesday, November 25 as IWU begins Crossroads League play at No. 10-ranked Bethel (Ind.). Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Mishawaka, Indiana.
