Men?s Basketball Crushes Purdue North Central

Box Score

MARION, Ind. -- Top-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University men’s basketball doubled up visiting Purdue North Central (Ind.) by a 90-45 outcome this afternoon in the final game of the Caleb Dimmich Memorial Classic in Luckey Arena.

Indiana Wesleyan shot a blistering 64.9-percent (37 of 57) from the field and seven Wildcats scored eight or more points. IWU outscored Purdue North Central by more than 20 points in each half.

“They slowed things down on us early,” said IWU head coach Greg Tonagel. “But once we stated locking in defensively we made things a lot more difficult on them than we did early on. Then when we built up the lead it forced them to speed things up.”

Jonny Marlin (JR/Greenwood, Ind.) scored a game-high 15 points and had six assists to zero turnovers. Lane Mahurin (SO/Rockville, Ind.) contributed 14 points, Zac Vandewater (SR/Warsaw, Ind.) and Bob Peters (SO/Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) each scored 11 points, and Jacob Johnson (FR/Mooresville, Ind.) was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field for 10 points. DJ Bettinger (SR/Richfield, Ohio) and Josh Mawhorr (JR/Muncie, Ind.) each chipped in with eight points.

Indiana Wesleyan finished the game with an 18-to-7 assist to turnover ratio while Purdue North Central was 7-to-20.

The Wildcats dominated play defensively limiting PNC to 36.5-percent (19 of 52) shooting as no Panther reached double digits in the scoring column. The Wildcats forced 20 turnovers on 14 steals. Peters collected six steals and Bettinger added four.

IU East defeated Oklahoma Wesleyan 89-70 in the first game of the day in Luckey.

Indiana Wesleyan returns to action on Tuesday night in the second half of a Luckey Arena doubleheader. The women’s basketball team hosts Brescia (Ky.) at 6 p.m. and the men’s basketball team battles IU East at 8 p.m.
