Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. -- DJ Bettinger put on a show tonight as No. 11-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University men’s basketball defeated host Goshen (Ind.) 92-78 tonight. The victory, coupled with a Huntington (Ind.) win against Saint Francis (Ind.), knots the three teams into a first place tie in the Crossroads League.
Tuesday was the final day of competition in the first round of games in the league. Indiana Wesleyan, Huntington, and Saint Francis are all tied for first place in the league with identical 7-2 records.
Bettinger was deadly from beyond the arc tonight as he drilled 8-of-10 3-pointers for a career-high 25 points. Bettinger surpassed his previous best scoring night of 20 points which he has done on two occasions earlier this season. The junior was a perfect 6-of-6 in the second half.
The added production from Bettinger came at a great time for Indiana Wesleyan. Senior RJ Mahurin was held out of the game as the forward missed his first game of the season.
Starting in Mahurin’s place tonight was freshman guard Bob Peters. He also stepped up like Bettinger with a career-high 11 assists. Peters just missed a double-doubles with nine points. Another freshman in the starting lineup, Lane Mahurin, tied a career-high with 17 points. He was 8-of-12 from the field.
Indiana Wesleyan (17-4, 7-2 CL) did little wrong in the victory as the team shot a blistering 66.7-percent (38 of 57) from the floor and 50.0-percent (10 of 20) from 3-point range. IWU shot an incredible 75.7-percent (28 of 37) from shots inside the arc. Indiana Wesleyan earned assists on 27 of their 38 field goals led by 11 from Peters. Jordan Weidner, who scored 19 points, assisted on five shots and is only seven away from Antonio Murrell for the most career assists in program history.
The Wildcats led by as many as 14 points in the first half and they took a 46-35 lead into halftime. Three minutes into the second half, the Maple Leafs (4-16, 2-7 CL) narrowed the deficit to five points at 48-43. But over the next 8 minutes the Wildcats went on a 26-7 run to lead by 24 points at 74-50.The lead grew to a game-best 26 points at 84-58 with six minutes left before the Maple Leafs finished the night on a 20-8 spurt.
Indiana Wesleyan will start the second half of Crossroads League play at 3 p.m. on Saturday. IWU travels to Mishawaka, Indiana to play No. 22-ranked Bethel (Ind.).
