MARION, Ind. – Spring Arbor (Mich.) University completed a four-game season sweep of Indiana Wesleyan University baseball on Tuesday with two wins at Wildcat Field.
Spring Arbor won the opening game 6-2 before winning 7-3 in the finale. SAU had swept a doubleheader in Michigan on Saturday.
In the opening contest, Spring Arbor broke open a close game through six innings with three runs in the top of the seventh. The three runs allowed Spring Arbor breathing room as their one run lead turned into four.
Trailing 3-1 in the sixth inning, Indiana Wesleyan threatened a big inning. CF Quinn Nofziger, DH Brice Davis, and LF Craig Dollens all reached base to open the frame to load the bases for the Wildcats. 3B Preston Fugita stepped up to the plate next and hit into a 6-3 double play. A run scored but now there were two outs with the tying run on third. After a pitching change, C Chris Miller grounded out to short to end the inning as IWU trailed 3-2.
Miller provided the early offense for Indiana Wesleyan. He hit a solo home run in the second that gave Indiana Wesleyan a 1-0 lead.
Michael Caley was the pitcher of record for the Wildcats. He allowed five runs on six hits in 6.2 innings with three walks and three strikeouts.
In game two, Indiana Wesleyan struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Nofziger led off with a double and advanced to third on a single by Fugita. With men on the corners, Dollens grounded into a 6-4-3 double play that allowed Nofziger to cross home plate for a 1-0 lead.
Spring Arbor answered with two runs in the top of the second and added to their lead with two more runs in the fifth for a 4-1 lead. The Wildcats cut the deficit in half in the fifth inning. SS Josh Ellis led off with a double and he would later score on a sac fly by Fugita.
The Cougars continued to build their lead in the seventh inning as SAU scored three times for a 7-2 lead. The Wildcats loaded the bases with nobody out to start the home half of the seventh. But Fugita grounded into a double play that scored Ellis. Dollens followed and grounded out on a great play by the SAU shortstop to end the night.
Bryan Beachy pitched the entire game for Indiana Wesleyan. He surrendered seven runs – six earned – on eight hits and three walks. He struck out four Cougars.
Indiana Wesleyan outhit Spring Arbor 12-8 in the game. Nofziger reached base four times with a 2-for-2 game and two walks. Fugita, Miller, Javier Aponte, and Ellis all contributed two hits.
Indiana Wesleyan remains at home for a doubleheader on Thursday versus University of Saint Francis (Ind.). The first game begins at 4 p.m.
