MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- Despite weather conditions unbecoming this time of year the Indiana Wesleyan University baseball team split a doubleheader at Bethel (Ind.) College in Mishawaka, Indiana.
The Wildcats claimed an opening game 6-2 victory while the Pilots earned a split with a 5-2 win in the nightcap. IWU moves to 19-19-1 on the season and 14-10 in the Crossroads League. Bethel moves to 10-26 and 7-15 in league play.
Indiana Wesleyan bats opened the day red-hot despite the weather. IWU scored in each of the first three innings to lead 5-2 after three innings. That would be enough for starting pitcher Michael Caley who went the distance. Caley allowed two runs on seven hits and four walks with four strikeouts.
The Wildcats added an insurance run in the sixth for the 6-2 final outcome.
Jacob Murphy went 1-for-2 with two walks, two RBI, and two runs scored while Quinn Nofziger was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI, and one stolen base. Indiana Wesleyan outhit Bethel 9-7.
Indiana Wesleyan struggled offensively in game two, managing just four hits. Despite the lack of hits, Indiana Wesleyan built a 2-0 lead with single runs in the second and fourth innings. Starting pitcher Bryan Beachy ran into trouble in the bottom of the fourth with three runs and again in the sixth as Bethel scored two more times for the 5-2 score.
Beachy pitched a complete game on Saturday and allowed five runs on eight hits. He walked two and struck out three in 6.0 innings.
Nofziger, Preston Fugita, Phillip Lougheed, and Trey Shigley accounted for all four Indiana Wesleyan hits. Nofziger, Shigley, Fugita, and Conner King were all aggressive on the base paths with a stolen base for each of them.
Indiana Wesleyan will next play at Taylor (Ind.) University at 1 p.m. tomorrow. The doubleheader will be contested in Upland, Indiana.
