MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University and Bethel (Ind.) College were able to get both games played today before rain could cancel the games. The teams split the doubleheader at Wildcat Field.
Bethel (9-25, 6-14 CL) won the opener 7-1 and Indiana Wesleyan earned a 6-3 victory in the nightcap. The second game was called in the bottom of the fifth due to rain.
Indiana Wesleyan (18-18-1, 13-9 CL) jumped on Bethel’s game two starting pitcher Mike Vanderlaan with a three run first inning. Jacob Murphy and Preston Fugita led the inning off with walks and Brice Davis chased them home on a double to deep left field. Davis then scored on a shallow single down the left field line by Chris Miller for the 3-0 lead.

The Pilots closed the gap to 5-3 in the top of the fourth but the Wildcats added another run in the home half. Murphy was hit by a pitch to open the inning. He stole second and took third on a wild throw by the catcher. Fugita followed with a sac fly to score Murphy for the 6-3 advantage.

Bethel increased their advantage to 7-0 with a big five runs fourth inning. An error on a sac bunt by Bethel led to two of the runs being credited as unearned in the inning.
Indiana Wesleyan finally cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning. AJ Harris scored the run when Cameron Screeton drew a bases loaded walk. Indiana Wesleyan failed to do more in the inning with just one out and the bases loaded as a 6-4-3 double play ended the threat.
