NEW ALBANY, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University baseball lost both ends of a doubleheader today to Indiana Tech in New Albany, Indiana. The games were played at the home of IU-Southeast.
Indiana Wesleyan drops to 5-7 on the season and ends their Spring Break trip. Indiana Tech, a team receiving votes in the NAIA Top-25 Preseason Poll, is now 5-4 this year.
In the opener, Indiana Tech scored two in the second and two more in the third to account for the game’s four runs. Indiana Wesleyan starter Shane Bryant then pitched very well over the final four innings as he did not allow another run.
Game two starter for the Wildcats was Michael Caley. He surrendered two run in the first as Tech led 2-0. In the third, Quinn Nofziger singled and stole second to get in scoring position. Brice Davis singled to score Nofziger to cut the lead in half 2-1 in the middle of the third. The Warriors though responded with three runs in the bottom half of the third for a 5-1 lead.
AJ Harris drilled an RBI single in the top of the fourth for a 5-2 score but Caley would get chased in the fifth as Indiana Tech scored three more runs to lead 8-2.
Indiana Wesleyan scored six runs in the sixth inning to suddenly tie the score 8-8 and the game would go extra innings. Harris hit a pop fly that was called an infield fly in the top of the eighth. The ball would drop and Preston Fugita scored to take a 9-8 IWU lead. Jacob Murphy then hit a 2-run single with the bases loaded to put the Wildcats in the lead 11-8.
Matt Blankenship came in to save the game in the bottom of the eighth. But the Warriors scored two to close to 11-10 and a sac fly tied the game at 11-11 and send the game to the ninth.
After a scoreless frame for the Wildcats, the Warriors loaded the bases with two out in the home half. A single up the middle gave the Warriors the 12-11 victory.
