DAYTON, Tenn. -- A three run eighth inning allowed Indiana Wesleyan University baseball to gain a big victory on their Spring Break trip with a 4-3 win at #RV Bryan (Tenn.) College in Dayton, Tennessee.
Lefty Cody Jones made his first appearance of the season and earned the victory on the mound with 7.0 strong innings. He left the game after retiring the side in the seventh trailing 3-1.
But the Indiana Wesleyan bats came alive in the top of the eighth. Quinn Nofziger led the inning off with an infield single and Brice Davis followed with a base on balls. Javier Aponte delivered an RBI double to bring Indiana Wesleyan within one run at 3-2. The Aponte double brought a pitching change for Bryan.
Peter Engle hit a grounder to short and the throw came home to cut off the tying run. But the throw was off the mark and Davis crossed the plate to tie the game 3-3. With men on the corners, Josh Ellis laid down the squeeze bunt which worked perfectly as courtesy runner Conner King scored the winning run.
Jon Keesling came in to pitch the eighth. With two on and two out, head coach Chad Newhard brought in Matt Blankenship in relief. Another runner reached base to load them, but Blankenship induced a ground ball to Jacob Murphy at short for the 6-3 putout to end the inning. Blankenship pitched the ninth and collected the save for the Wildcats.
Indiana Wesleyan improves to 5-3 this season while Bryan, which is receiving votes in the NAIA preseason poll, falls to 11-8.
The Wildcats travel to Georgia for a doubleheader at Reinhardt (Ga.) University tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Waleska.
