INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University baseball team finally took the field today and captured a doubleheader sweep over Marian (Ind.) University in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The Wildcats were scheduled to play Marian on Tuesday and Thursday and both DH’s were postponed due to weather and field conditions. The home set with the Knights was lost but IWU took care of business on the road with two wins today. The Wildcats won 3-2 in 11 innings in the first game and completed the sweep with a 5-2 win.
Michael Caley was dominant on the mound for the Wildcats and he got one run of support in the fourth inning. Craig Dollens singled home Quinn Nofziger in the top of the fourth for the game’s first run. Caley would make that run hold until the bottom of the seventh. A leadoff double for the Knights eventually scored to tie the game 1-1. MU had runners on first and second with no outs but Caley escaped to send the game to extra innings.
Marian (1-8, 0-2 CL) loaded the bases in the eighth inning but Caley was still going strong and was able to hold and send the game to the ninth. Jacob Murphy put Indiana Wesleyan ahead 2-1 in the 10th but Marian scored the tying run with two outs in the bottom half. Matt Blankenship came in to relieve Caley to get the final out of the inning.
In the top of the 11th Peter Engle drilled an RBI single to again put Indiana Wesleyan in the lead 3-2. Blankenship shut the door on Marian in the bottom of the 11th for the extra inning victory.
Indiana Wesleyan (7-9-1, 2-0 CL) plated two runs on a Javier Aponte single in the top of the first in game two for a quick 2-0 advantage. IWU was not done as Trey Shigley stole third and a bad throw by the catcher allowed Shigley to score for a 3-0 game. Preston Fugita followed with an RBI single to go up 4-0 and a bases loaded wild pitch allowed Indiana Wesleyan to take a 5-0 lead before Marian ever came up to bat.
The five runs in the inning were more than enough for starting pitcher Bryan Beachy. He allowed single runs in the second and fifth innings but that would be it. Beachy pitched the complete game for the 5-2 win and the doubleheader sweep.
Indiana Wesleyan returns to action tomorrow at 4 p.m. with the first game of the season at Wildcat Field as IWU hosts Grace (Ind.) College.
