GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Host Cornerstone (Mich.) University pulled out a doubleheader sweep in baseball action today over Indiana Wesleyan University in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Indiana Wesleyan falls to 5-9 on the season with the two losses today. Scores on Thursday were 6-3 and 4-3.
The Golden Eagles got the ball rolling right away on Thursday against IWU starting pitcher Michael Caley with a three run first inning in the opener. CU added two more in the third and one more in the fourth to lead 6-0.
The Wildcats cut the deficit in half with a three run fifth inning. Brice Davis hit a sac fly to score the first Wildcat run and Craig Dollens ripped a two-run single later in the inning for the 6-3 score. The three run inning would be the only runs for the Wildcats in the first game as the Golden Eagles earned the 6-3 victory.
Bryan Beach took the mound for Indiana Wesleyan in game two and kept Cornerstone off the scoreboard until the fourth inning. The CU run in the fourth broke a scoreless tie. Indiana Wesleyan quickly responded in the fifth inning with a run and the game remained 1-1 until Cornerstone regained the lead at 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth.
The Wildcats took their first lead on Thursday in the top of the seventh with two runs to lead 3-2. But the Golden Eagles matched IWU with a two-run bottom of the seventh for the 4-3 walk-off victory.
Indiana Wesleyan will now jump into Crossroads League action their next time out which is on Tuesday at 4 p.m. Indiana Wesleyan hosts Marian (Ind.) University at Wildcat Field.
