Bench Plays Highlights Men?s Basketball Victory over Olivet

Box Score

MARION, Ind. -- More than half of the points for No. 7 Indiana Wesleyan University men’s basketball came off the bench tonight in an 89-63 victory against Olivet (Mich.) in non-league play at Luckey Arena.

Three Wildcats scored in double figures off the bench as the non-starters scored 46 of the team’s 89 points. All eight Wildcats played at least five minutes and seven of them were on the court for over 10 minutes.

The game tonight was originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon. It was postponed until today due to the heavy snow throughout the area on Saturday.

Freshman guard Bob Peters led the unit with a new career-high of 14 points in just under 26 minutes. He was 5-of-8 shooting and 4-of-6 from 3-point range. He also pulled down three rebounds and dished out three assists.

“Peters is a basketball player,” said IWU head coach Greg Tonagel. “I continue to be impressed with him. He is a coach’s son and you can tell by the way he plays. He is a tough kid and is going to be a great player for us.”

Junior forward Tyler Greathouse was perfect from the floor with 11 points on 4-of-4 shooting and 3-of-3 from 3-point range while freshman forward Lane Mahurin added 10 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Also scoring off the bench tonight were Aaron Murray with six points, Garvin Haughey with three points, and Kylan Dubbels with two.

“Those guys work hard every day,” continued Tonagel. “To get them out there is a great opportunity. I thought the whole bench did well from Garvin Haughey to Josiah Godbey. They all did a good job.”

Indiana Wesleyan (10-2) put the game away early with the first 14 points of the night in just under three minutes. Olivet would never recover as the double digit lead remained throughout the rest of the game. Indiana Wesleyan led by as many as 26 points on two different occasions late in the half before taking a 46-22 halftime advantage.

The Comets (2-6) cut the lead to 17 points twice in the second half with the last of those coming at 67-50 with 6:51 remaining. The Wildcats would pull away with another double digit run as IWU scored 13 unanswered points for an 80-50 lead.

“Those two spurts were really helped by Bob Peters and Tyler Greathouse coming off the bench,” said Tonagel. “Both of those guys gave us great production tonight.”

Haughey nailed a 3-pointer with 2:22 left to give Indiana Wesleyan its largest lead of the game at 31 points. The bucket put IWU ahead 89-58 and was the last points of the night for the team.

Senior forward RJ Mahurin was the only starter for Indiana Wesleyan in double figures. He finished with a double-double with game-highs of 20 points and 13 rebounds. Senior guard Jordan Weidner added eight points and seven assists, freshman forward Nate Bubash added six points and four rebounds, junior guard DJ Bettinger chipped in five points, four boards, and five assists, and junior guard Zac Vandewater earned four points, 11 rebounds and five assists.

The Wildcats shot 53.2-percent (33 of 62) overall and were 82.4-percent (14 of 17) from the foul line. IWU held a huge 52-31 advantage on the boards and had 25 assists compared to 10 for the Comets.

Indiana Wesleyan will travel to Fort Lauderdale, Florida tomorrow for the Cruizin’ Classic for two midweek contests. IWU battles No. 15 Midland (Neb.) at 2 p.m. on Wednesday and then Morningside (Iowa) at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
