Box Score SPRING ARBOR, Mich. -- No. 2 Indiana Wesleyan University men’s basketball won a tough 83-74 game against Cornerstone (Mich.) tonight in the first contest of the Crossroads League / WHAC Challenge, hosted by Spring Arbor (Mich.).
“It was a very good win for us tonight,” said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Greg Tonagel. “Cornerstone is a well-coached team and they have always given us fits. It was a battle tonight and a grind out game, not a track meet like our first three games.”
The Wildcats were led by the pair of Jordan Weidner and Zac Vandewater who scored 47 of the team’s 83 points. Weidner led all players with 25 points and was 11-of-12 from the foul line. For the second time this season Vandewater set a new career-high in points. Tonight, Vandewater scored 22 points on 5-of-8 shooting and 12-of-18 from the foul line.
Indiana Wesleyan trailed throughout most of the first half and was down eight with 2:50 left before halftime. But Indiana Wesleyan scored 13 of the final 17 points to capture a 37-36 lead at the break. Vandewater fueled the run with six points, including an offensive rebound that sent him to the foul line for two shots at the horn.
“We played a terrible first half,” said Tonagel. “We struggled with foul trouble but it shows the depth of this team. Guys came off the bench and made a difference. The run before half was key and it changed the complex of the game.”
Indiana Wesleyan built a lead as large as 10 points on four different occasions in the second half. Cornerstone would get no closer than six points over the final six minutes of action.
Indiana Wesleyan will complete the Crossroads League / WHAC Challenge tomorrow at 1 p.m. Indiana Wesleyan will play Aquinas (Mich.) in the first game of the day.
