Box Score WINONA LAKE, Ind. -- Junior guard Jordan Weidner did just about everything for No. 3 Indiana Wesleyan University men's basketball but it was not enough Tuesday night as No. 20 Grace (Ind.) College won 80-77 in Winona Lake, Indiana.
Weidner tied a career-high with 30 points and set new personal bests with seven 3-pointers and seven rebounds. He also dished out seven assists which is one shy of a career-best mark. Indiana Wesleyan (20-3, 9-2 CL) and Grace were nearly identical shooting from the field as IWU hit 51.0-percent (26 of 51) and Grace at 50.0-percent (26 of 52). Both teams also shot in the high 40's from 3-point range but Indiana Wesleyan made 11 from distance compared to six for Grace. But the difference in the game was free throw shooting. Grace did take four more free throws but scored eight more points with a 22-of-28 effort while Indiana Wesleyan hit just 14-of-24.
The high paced first half saw Grace lead nearly the entire period. Grace built two leads of eight points and led 45-40 at the break. The 45 points for Grace at the half was more than Marian (Ind.) University scored against Indiana Wesleyan the entire game on Saturday in a 48-44 IWU victory.
Grace (16-6, 8-3 CL) led by as many as seven in the early portion of the second half. Indiana Wesleyan would gain its first lead of the second half when a George Jones IV's basket put IWU on top 63-62 with 10:33 left. Indiana Wesleyan would build their largest advantage of the game at 66-62 but a 5-0 Grace spurt put the home team back in front 67-66.
The Lancers would not surrender the lead until senior forward Patrick Hopkins scored in the paint with 1:35 remaining for a 75-73 lead. Grace tied the score on their next possession with two free throws.
Indiana Wesleyan turned the ball over on their next possession which eventually led to an old-fashion 3-point play for Grace. The foul was the fifth for Hopkins who had been in foul trouble the entire game. The play resulted in a 78-75 Grace advantage with 38 seconds to play.
The Wildcats went for the lead but sophomore guard DJ Bettinger missed the 3-point shot and the Lancers pulled down the rebound. A foul sent the Lancers to the line where they hit both for a 79-75 lead. Bettinger scored with seven seconds left to cut the deficit to 79-77. A foul with five seconds remaining put the Lancers on the line. After the first free throw went down, Grace fouled twice to send the Wildcats to the line instead of letting them shoot the game-tying 3-point attempt. Weidner missed the first free throw and attempted to miss the second but committed a violation to void the shot as Grace pulled out the victory.
Fouls limited Hopkins to 23 minutes although the senior did score 15 and pulled down four rebounds while Bettinger was the third Wildcat in double figures with 10 points. Sophomore guard Zac Vandewater added nine points and Jones IV finished with eight.
Indiana Wesleyan remains on the road for their next game on Saturday. IWU travels to Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) University for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
