UPLAND, Ind. -- Taylor (Ind.) University won both ends of a doubleheader with Indiana Wesleyan University baseball on Saturday afternoon in Upland, Indiana.
Taylor is receiving votes in the latest NAIA Top-25 Coaches' Poll and won by scores of 5-4 and 6-2 for the sweep. The losses drop Indiana Wesleyan to 16-21 overall and 8-10 in the Mid-Central College Conference.
In game one Taylor led 3-2 as the teams headed into the top of the sixth inning. Centerfielder Quinn Nofziger led off the inning for the Wildcats with a single to leftfield. He stole second and catcher Alex Ridlen walked. Nofziger then stole third and scored on a wild pitch which resulted in Ridlen moving up to third base. Rightfielder Craig Dollens followed with a sac fly to score Ridlen and give the Wildcats a 4-3 advantage.
The Trojans tied the score in the bottom of the inning when starting pitcher Sam Lewis hit a batter with the bases loaded to send the tying run home. That would be the last pitch for Lewis as Justin Sovine entered in relief and forced a ground out to end the inning.
Taylor then won the game in the bottom of the seventh on a bases loaded single to center for the 5-4 victory.
Sam Lewis surrendered four runs on four hits in 5.2 innings as he walked six and struck out six. Justin Sovine was the losing pitcher in relief as he allowed one run in two-thirds of an inning.
Quinn Nofziger had a 2-for-4 game at the plate with two runs, two steals, and a double. Craig Dollens and first baseman Peter Engle each hit a single and had an RBI in the loss.
Taylor jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed in game two. IWU would cut the lead in half when Peter Engle grounded into a double play with the bases loaded in the fourth inning. Quinn Nofziger would score on the play.
But the Trojans would add three more in the fifth and another in the sixth to build a 6-1 advantage. The Wildcats added a run in the seventh when third baseman Preston Fugita drilled an RBI single to leftfield.
Ryne Brown pitched a complete game for Indiana Wesleyan and gave up six runs, but just two were earned. The defense let Brown down with three errors which led to four unearned runs. Brown gave up seven hits and two walks while striking out seven.
Alex Ridlen went 2-for-3 as Indiana Wesleyan finished with just six hits in the game.
Indiana Wesleyan and Taylor will continue their four game series on Tuesday, April 10 when Indiana Wesleyan hosts a doubleheader at Wildcat Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
