Baseball Beats Northwestern (Iowa) 12-8

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Indiana Wesleyan University baseball took down Northwestern (Iowa) College by a 12-8 margin today at the RussMatt Invitational in Phoenix, Arizona.

The victory moves Indiana Wesleyan to 2-4 out West and 5-8 on the season.

Centerfielder CJ Sandmann earned a RBI single in the third inning to tie the score 1-1 but Northwestern reclaimed their one run lead with a run in the bottom of the inning. Indiana Wesleyan took its first lead of the day in the fourth on a two-run single by shortstop Josh Ellis for a 3-2 lead. Leftfielder Quinn Nofziger drove in two more runs later in the inning as IWU built a 5-2 advantage through four innings.

First baseman Peter Engle gave the Wildcats a 6-2 lead in the fifth on a sac fly but Northwestern put up four runs in the bottom of the inning off starting pitcher Bryan Beachy to tie the score 6-6. In the sixth inning, Indiana Wesleyan strung together four straight hits as Sandmann and Nofziger each collected RBI singles. Rightfielder Craig Dollens capped the inning with a run scoring single to put Indiana Wesleyan up 9-6.

Beachy was done after six innings of work. He allowed six runs -- five earned -- on nine hits. He walked one and struck out three. Freshman Justine Sovine entered in relief of Beachy.

Indiana Wesleyan added two insurance runs in the seventh. Designated Alex Ridlen and catcher Javier Aponte each drove in a run for an 11-7 lead. IWU added another in the top of the ninth to take a 12-8 lead into the bottom of the ninth.

Sovine took care of the Red Raiders in the ninth and finished the game with a strikeout. He earned his first collegiate save as he pitched three innings of one run baseball.

Five Wildcats had multi-hit games on Wednesday, led by Nofziger's 4-for-6 performance. Ellis was 3-for-4 while third baseman Preston Fugita, Murphy, and Aponte each added two hits.

Indiana Wesleyan will have an off day on Thursday before returning to action on Friday. IWU will play a doubleheader versus Northern State (S.D.) University on Friday.
