Box Score MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- No. 15-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University men's basketball pulled away late from Bethel (Ind.) College in a 94-87 victory to extend its win streak to six in a row.
Indiana Wesleyan (19-9, 11-5 MCC) scored a season-high 33 points from the free throw line. IWU's previous high was 28 free throws made on January 28 versus Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) University, but that took three overtimes to achieve. Indiana Wesleyan was shooting 62.6-percent from the foul line this season and finished Saturday at 80.5-percent (33 of 41).
Sophomore guard Jordan Weidner paced the Indiana Wesleyan attack by tying a season-high with 27 points. He was perfect from the foul line at 11-for-11 and was 7-of-14 from the field. During the current six game win streak Weidner has averaged 19.8 points.
Indiana Wesleyan opened the game with a 13-7 lead and never trailed throughout the first half. IWU built their largest lead of the half at 37-25 on a 3-pointer by senior guard Derrick Troyer with 5:00 remaining before halftime.
Bethel (16-12, 7-9 MCC) scored 13 of the final 18 points in the opening 20 minutes to make a close 42-38 game at the break.
Weidner drilled a 3 for a 55-50 lead with 13:16 remaining in the game. But Bethel responded with seven unanswered points to take a 57-55 advantage for their first lead of the afternoon.
Indiana Wesleyan answered the Bethel run with a 9-0 stretch to reclaim a 64-57 lead with 8:28 to play. Junior guard Aaron Martin hit a 3-pointer to start the run and give IWU the lead back as he scored seven of the nine points in the run. He finished with 17 points in 20 minutes.
Leading 66-61 with a little more than seven minutes to play, Indiana Wesleyan reeled off six straight points to push the lead up to 11 at 72-61. Bethel would drill a 3 on their next possession but Indiana Wesleyan scored six straight to capture their largest lead of the day at 77-64 with 3:14 on the clock.
The Wildcats would hold a double digit lead as late as the final minute before hitting free throws to ice the victory. IWU scored on 10-of-11 free throw opportunities in the last 1:34.
The four regular Indiana Wesleyan starters all scored at least 15 points in the victory. Joining Weidner and Martin was Troyer with 21 points and junior forward Patrick Hopkins with 15. Hopkins added game-bests of nine boards and six assists. Troyer dished out five assists with no turnovers. Junior guard George Jones IV is out for the rest of the season due to an injury.
Indiana Wesleyan remains in a first place tie in the Mid-Central College Conference as Grace (Ind.) College edged University of Saint Francis (Ind.) 89-87. Both teams are 11-5 in the MCC with just two games remaining. Indiana Wesleyan also locked up a top-two seed in the upcoming MCC Tournament.
The Wildcats return to Luckey Arena for their final regular season home game on Tuesday, February 14. IWU hosts Grant County rival Taylor (Ind.) University at 7 p.m. on Mustache Night.
