Box Score MARION, Ind. -- No. 3 Indiana Wesleyan University men's basketball frustrated one of the premiere scorers in NAIA Division II on Saturday in a 78-51 victory over Trinity Christian (Ill.) College in Luckey Arena.
Trinity Christian (3-12) senior guard BJ Wortham entered played today ranked second in the country with 24.2 points per contest. He had averaged 27.0 points in his last seven games which included games against three top-25 opponents. But on Saturday Wortham was limited to just 16 points on 4-of-15 shooting. He was 2-of-9 from beyond the arc and the frustrated senior fouled out in the final five minutes.
The Trolls struggled against the Wildcat defense the entire game and were stifled in the first half. The Trolls could only muster 17 points on 21.7-percent (5 of 23) shooting in the first 20 minutes and turned the ball over 12 times.
While Wortham was the only Troll in double figures, the Wildcats boasted four players with 11 or more points. Junior guard Jordan Weidner led all players with 23 points while senior forward Patrick Hopkins added 21, sophomore guard DJ Bettinger earned 12, and senior guard George Jones IV finished with 11.
Hopkins collected 10 rebounds for the double-double and Indiana Wesleyan won the battle of the boards 42-35. Junior center Parker Stouffer pulled down seven boards and senior guard Aaron Martin had six.
Indiana Wesleyan (14-1) was credited with 15 assists to just 12 turnovers while Trinity Christian had seven assists and 24 turnovers. Weidner led IWU with five assists.
Bettinger returned from injury and played in his first game since November 17. He did so with a bang as he set a new career-high with 12 points and a career-best four 3-pointers. He was 4-of-5 from 3-point range.
Indiana Wesleyan is now heading back into Crossroads League play for the remainder of the regular season. IWU will travel to Huntington (Ind.) University on Wednesday, January 2 for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
