Box Score MARION, Ind. -- For the second time this week the No. 4-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University men's basketball team defeated a ranked opponent, this time it was No. 11-ranked Davenport (Mich.) University by a 65-55 score in the Caleb Dimmich Tournament championship.
The win completes an extremely busy first week of action for the Wildcats as it was the fourth game in five days. Indiana Wesleyan defeated No. 14-ranked St. Xavier (Ill.) University on Tuesday, played an exhibition at Indiana University in Assembly Hall on Thursday, defeated Purdue North-Central (Ind.) on Friday and then Davenport today.
Indiana Wesleyan never trailed on Saturday after sophomore guard DJ Bettinger scored on the Wildcats' first possession. Senior guard Darrian Mikell hit a shot from the free throw line as time expired in the first half to give Indiana Wesleyan a 32-20 lead, with the 12 points lead the largest advantage in the half.
The Wildcats led by double digits for quite a bit of the early second half. But with 7:21 remaining Davenport made its run.
Panther guard Dominez Burnett hit two free throws to cut the score to 54-45 as the lead became single digits. Those free throws came amid a 12-2 run for the Panthers that eventually brought the game to a one possession contest when DU forward Derek Brooks scored in the paint to make it 56-53 with just 2:36 on the clock.
Indiana Wesleyan would respond with the next four points on two free throws by senior forward Patrick Hopkins and a layup in the paint by junior guard Jordan Weidner. That made it 60-53 with 1:23 remaining. After a defensive stop, Bettinger ended any late heroics with a deep 3-point basket for the 63-53 lead.
Senior guard Aaron Martin led all players with 16 points despite playing less than 21 minutes. He hit 4-of-8 from the field and was a perfect 7-of-7 from the foul line. Weidner was the only other Wildcat in double figures with 15 points.
Indiana Wesleyan held Davenport to just 37.0-percent (20 of 54) shooting on Saturday, including 25.9-percent (7 of 27) in the opening half.
Indiana Wesleyan returns to action next weekend at the annual Crossroads/WHAC Challenge. Cornerstone (Mich.) University will host the event this year in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
