Box Score MARION, Ind. -- Head coach Greg Tonagel wanted to make sure that his Indiana Wesleyan University men's basketball team was well rested as the team played in the second of three games in as many days.
Indiana Wesleyan used 50 points from bench players in a 78-42 victory over University of Purdue North-Central in the Caleb Dimmich Memorial Tournament in Luckey Arena. Seven players off the bench played double digit minutes while all nine bench players played over eight and a half minutes.
"Our goal was to keep all the starters under 20 minutes today," said Tonagel. "And we were able to do that today thanks to the great play by our bench. They came out and competed tonight and really played well."
Indiana Wesleyan played the top-ranked Indiana University Hoosiers in an exhibition last night in front of 17,186 fans in Assembly Hall. Tonight was the first round of games in the Caleb Dimmich Tournament with the championship game scheduled for 3 p.m. tomorrow where No. 4-ranked Indiana Wesleyan will battle No. 11-ranked Davenport (Mich.) University. Davenport destroyed University of Miami-Hamilton in the first game on Friday, 96-32.
Sophomore forward Tyler Greathouse hit a career-high 15 points to lead all scorers tonight. He nailed 5-of-9 from 3-point range and led the team with 22 minutes of floor time. Senior guard George Jones IV added 10 points off the bench as the Wildcat bench held a 50-15 advantage.
Senior forward Patrick Hopkins was the lone starter in double figures with 11 points as he was a perfect 5-of-5 from the field. Senior forward Taylor Schoen had a team-high seven rebounds Friday while junior guard Jordan Weidner and senior guard Darrian Mikell led the Wildcats with three assists apiece. Ten Wildcats earned assists as the team totaled 17 overall.
Indiana Wesleyan and Davenport will battle for the Caleb Dimmich Tournament championship tomorrow at 3 p.m. in Luckey Arena. The contest is the second this season for Indiana Wesleyan against a NAIA DII Top-25 opponent as IWU beat No. 14-ranked St. Xavier (Ill.) University in the season opener on Tuesday. Miami-Hamilton and Purdue North-Central will play the consolation game in the first game Saturday at 1 p.m.
