MARION, Ind. -- Goshen (Ind.) College took a pair of games today from the Indiana Wesleyan University baseball team in Goshen, Indiana.
The Maple Leafs earned the doubleheader sweep with wins of 8-2 and 2-1 in the teams' only meeting during the season.
Goshen (9-26, 4-8 MCC) captured momentum in the opener with a six run second inning. Indiana Wesleyan scored single runs in the third and fourth innings but those were wiped out when Goshen knocked in a pair of runs in the fifth inning for the 8-2 advantage.
Tim Zeigler took the loss for the Wildcats, allowing eight earned runs in 4.1 innings of work. He surrendered six hits and three walks while striking out six.
Indiana Wesleyan (14-22, 5-7 MCC) totaled four hits in the games with designated hitter Peter Engle's double was the lone extra base hit. Shortstop Josh Ellis was 1-for-1 with a run and two walks while leftfielder Craig Dollens finished 1-for-3 with a steal.
Goshen again struck first in game two with a run in the third inning, but Indiana Wesleyan tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the fifth when centerfielder Quinn Nofziger hit a sac fly to score courtesy runner Conner Cunningham.
The Maple Leafs regained the one run lead in the sixth inning and held on for the 2-1 victory.
Starting pitcher Ryne Brown allowed two runs on six hits for the Wildcats. He pitched all six innings and walked one and struck out one in the losing effort.
Nofziger was a perfect 2-for-2 at the dish with a double and a RBI. Second baseman Brice Davis and pinch hitter Alex Ridlen each had one hit to account for the four for IWU in the game.
Indiana Wesleyan returns home on Saturday in a MCC doubleheader with Huntington (Ind.) University. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Wildcat Field.
