MARION, Ind. -- Starting pitcher Ryne Brown was dominant against Spring Arbor (Mich.) University with a two-hit complete game shutout as Indiana Wesleyan University baseball completed a doubleheader split on Thursday night at Wildcat Field.
The 2-0 victory in the nightcap followed another strong pitching performance for the Wildcats in game one. Michael Caley (5-5) was the hard luck loser in the 5-1 opening game loss.
Caley surrendered five runs, but just two were earned, as he pitched his eight complete game of the season. He scattered 10 hits and struck out seven.
Brown (2-4) did not allow a hit over the final five innings of work and walked just one during that stretch. His only tight stretch the entire game came in the first when he stranded the bases loaded. Brown got out of the jam when he induced an easy fly ball to left from leftfielder Mav Nichols.
Indiana Wesleyan scored the one run they would need in the bottom half of the first. Leftfielder Quinn Nofziger reached home on a RBI groundout from catcher Alex Ridlen.
Spring Arbor received a hit up the middle by second baseman Taylor Lange with two outs in the second inning. The single would be the last hit of the night for SAU.
The Wildcats added an insurance run in the sixth when rightfielder Craig Dollens singled home second baseman Derek Freds for a 2-0 lead.
After recording the first out in the seventh, Brown walked Nichols to bring up the tying run for Spring Arbor. But Brown would strike out DH Alex Zeiher and catcher Shane Street, both looking, to end the game.
Freds had a pair of doubles for Indiana Wesleyan while centerfielder CJ Sandmann and Nofziger each stole a base.
In the opener, Indiana Wesleyan scored the first run of the game in the fourth when Freds scored on a Spring Arbor error that would have been the third out. Spring Arbor would benefit from errors in the next half inning. With one out in the top of the fifth, Indiana Wesleyan misplayed groundballs on back-to-back at bats to extend the inning. Spring Arbor took advantage and scored three unearned runs to led 3-1.
Indiana Wesleyan never seriously threatened in its final three at bats. Spring Arbor added a pair of runs in the sixth for the final score of 5-1.
Zeiher tossed a three-hit complete game for Spring Arbor to earn the win on the mound. He walked one and struck out three to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Sandmann was the lone Wildcat to reach base twice in the game as he was 1-for-2 with a walk and a steal. Nofziger added a double while third baseman Jonathan Bastian finished 1-for-3 with a RBI.
The two teams renew acquaintances on Saturday at 1 p.m. with a second doubleheader in Spring Arbor, Michigan.
