MARION, Ind. - Two days after splitting a doubleheader with Bethel (Ind.) College in Mishawaka, the Indiana Wesleyan University baseball team earned the same result against the Pilots at home on Saturday.
The Wildcats (13-19, 5-5 MCC) cruised to victory in the opener by a score of 9-2 and fell in the second game 8-3.
After allowing two runs in the first inning of game one, IWU sophomore pitcher Michael Caley shut down the Bethel offense for the remainder of the contest. Caley would go the distance allowing two runs on nine hits and two walks, while striking out seven in the win.
The Wildcats offense struck big in the fourth inning as they took a slim 3-2 lead and turned it into a 9-2 advantage. IWU sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning as they recorded two hits, three walks, and four hit batsmen to score six runs.
IWU senior CJ Sandmann went 2-for-4 with two runs scored in the first game and Derek Freds, Peter Engle, and Kyle Beachy each knocked in two runs in the victory.
Bethel (14-10, 6-4 MCC) managed to turn the tables on the Wildcats in the second game as they used a four-run fifth inning to jump out to an 8-2 lead and hung on to win 8-3.
IWU sophomore outfielder Craig Dollens went 3-for-3 with a solo homerun and a double, while senior catcher Alex Ridlen went 2-for-4 in the second game.
Indiana Wesleyan junior pitcher Ryne Brown started the game and recorded the loss. Brown allowed eight runs on ten hits and five walks in 4.2 innings pitched. Senior Jeremy Worrell did not allow a run the final 2.1 innings as he surrendered only two hits and struck out five.
The Wildcats will take a break from conference play as they travel to play Sienna Heights (Mich.) University on Tuesday in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
