UPLAND, Ind. -- Taylor (Ind.) University increased their win streak to 17 with a doubleheader sweep over Indiana Wesleyan University baseball on Saturday in Upland, Indiana.
Taylor (26-11, 14-0 MCC) won 13-7 and 14-2 in very windy conditions in Upland. With the wind blowing out, the teams combined for 15 extra base hits.
The Trojans jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the opener with six runs in the first and two more in the second. The Wildcats cut the lead in half with four runs in the fourth to draw to 8-4. IWU would get no closer as TU extended their advantage to 10-4 in the fifth before capping off the win 13-7.
Jeremy Worrell was the pitcher of record for Indiana Wesleyan. Worrell gave up 10 runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. He walked six and struck out five as he falls to 0-6 this season.
Four of the nine Indiana Wesleyan (17-27, 8-12 MCC) hits were doubles by centerfielder CJ Sandmann, third baseman Jonathan Bastian, leftfielder Craig Dollens and shortstop Josh Ellis. First baseman Quinn Nofziger was 2-for-4 at the plate with a run and a RBI while second baseman Brice Davis finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
In game two, Taylor again scored early and often, leading 12-0 after two innings. Taylor outhit Indiana Wesleyan 12-4 in the game.
Tim Zeigler took the loss as he allowed 10 runs - seven earned - in 1 2/3 innings. Zeigler gave up eight hits and walked two as he drops to 4-5 on the mound.
Sandmann accounted for half the Indiana Wesleyan hits in the second game. Rightfielder Derek Freds added a 1-for-2 performance with a double and a run scored.
Indiana Wesleyan will leave conference play on Tuesday and head up to Ann Arbor, Michigan to battle Concordia (Mich.) University at 1 p.m.
