Box Score POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. -- Defense may win championships but No. 9-seed Indiana Wesleyan University simply outshot Indiana University-East tonight in a 95-92 victory in the NAIA Division II National Tournament First Round in Point Lookout, Missouri.
Senior Will Hubertz led an Indiana Wesleyan barrage from 3-point range that neared record proportions. Hubertz hit a career-high eight 3-pointers Wednesday as Indiana Wesleyan finished with 15 as a team. Both Hubertz and the Wildcats finished two 3-pointers shy of tying the NAIA National Championship record.
Hubertz finished with a career-best 30 points as Indiana Wesleyan advanced to the NAIA Sweet 16 for the fourth time in five years. He was 10-of-17 overall and 8-of-13 from deep.
"I'm really proud of Will," said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Greg Tonagel. "He showed up like a big-time senior tonight. He came out here to win."
IU-East had a final chance to tie the score after Hubertz hit one of two free throws with 4.0 seconds remaining and IWU leading 95-92. IU-East's David Sanders chucked a shot from near midcourt as the buzzer sounded that rimmed out and left the Wildcats with a big sigh of relief.
IU-East is an offensive minded team that often plays five guard sets. Entering the tournament, IU-East ranked fourth in the nation with 88.9 points per game and averaged more than nine 3-pointers per game on 25 attempts.
The Red Wolves finished 12-of-27 (44.4-percent) from beyond the arc tonight as the teams combined for 27 3-pointers to finish two 3-point field goals shy of the national tournament record for 3-pointers combined in a game.
But Indiana Wesleyan was able to beat IU-East at their own game.
"Our game plan was not to try and outscore them," said Tonagel. "We wanted them to have to matchup with us but we ended up having to try and match up with them. We played with the small lineup pretty well though. Taylor (Schoen) came in and played some big-time minutes too."
Indiana Wesleyan usually beats teams with a balanced offensive attack as six players average seven or more points per game. But tonight Indiana Wesleyan received 76 of its 95 points from Hubertz, freshman guard Jordan Weidner and sophomore forward Patrick Hopkins.
"Will and Jordan hit timely shot all night long," added Tonagel. "Those are the two toughest competitors and they came out here tonight and showed it. They're just big shot players."
Weidner finished with 26 points on 7-of-12 shooting and 5-of-8 from deep. He came up huge in the second half with 19 points and four clutch 3-pointers in the final 20 minutes. Hopkins added 20 points on 5-of-10 shooting and 10-of-12 free throws. Hopkins led all players with nine rebounds and Weidner pulled down seven.
Neither team could stretch a lead as seven points was the largest lead for either team.
Free throws were a major factor in the outcome of the game. Indiana Wesleyan hit 22-of-27 (81.5-percent) from the charity stripe while IU-East struggled to 12-of-21 (57.1-percent).
Indiana Wesleyan will next play the winner of No. 8-seed Oregon Tech and unseeded Cardinal-Stritch (Wis.) University on Friday.
