INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University baseball dropped a doubleheader to Marian (Ind.) University on Tuesday afternoon in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Marian (5-10, 2-0 MCC) won the first game 7-5 and clinched the sweep with a 6-2 victory.
The Knights won the error-filled first game 7-5 as half of the 12 runs were unearned. The teams combined for nine errors in the game.
Indiana Wesleyan (11-17, 3-3 MCC) opened the day with a two-run first inning but was matched by Marian with two in the bottom of the inning. IWU added single runs in the second and third innings but were again matched by Marian in the bottom half of each inning as the score was tied 4-4 after three innings.
The Knights took their first lead of the game in the fourth with two runs and did not relinquish the advantage. The Wildcats closed to within 6-5 in the fifth inning but the Knights added an insurance run in the sixth to cap the 7-5 victory.
Freshman Chris Tyler was credited with the loss as he surrendered six runs - three earned - in five innings. He allowed five hits and five walks while striking out two.
Freshman shortstop Josh Ellis finished 2-for-3 with two RBI while senior third baseman Jonathan Bastian had a 2-for-3 performance with one run. Indiana Wesleyan and Marian each had seven hits in the game.
In game two, Marian pulled out a 6-2 victory behind a strong pitching performance from Aaron Wilder. He pitched a complete game and allowed two runs on six hits while striking out six Wildcats.
Five of the six runs allowed by Indiana Wesleyan were unearned due to five errors. Senior Jeremy Worrell took the loss as he allowed six runs - one earned - on six hits in 5.1 innings.
Bastian was the only Wildcat with a multi-hit game as he was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Senior first baseman Kyle Beachy was 1-for-2 at the plate with a double, RBI and a run scored as Marian outhit Indiana Wesleyan 7-6.
Indiana Wesleyan will remain on the road for their next doubleheader at Bethel (Ind.) College in Mishawaka, Indiana on Thursday, March 31. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
