IWU, Saint Francis Split Baseball Doubleheader

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University traveled to Fort Wayne, Indiana on Saturday and earned a doubleheader split at University of Saint Francis (Ind.).

Indiana Wesleyan (11-15, 3-1 MCC) piled it on in the first game to win 15-3 in a five inning mercy rule before Saint Francis salvaged a Saturday split with a 12-5 victory. IWU won three of four from Saint Francis over the four game weekend series.

Third baseman Jonathan Bastian had the biggest day at the plate for Indiana Wesleyan in game one which featured 15 Wildcat runs on 14 hits. The senior was 3-for-3 with three doubles, three runs and five RBI.

Shortstop Josh Ellis also hit 3-for-3 in the opener. The freshman added a double, one run and four RBI. Centerfielder CJ Sandmann, catcher Alex Ridlen and leftfielder Craig Dollens all added two hits apiece.

The Wildcats got the bats going early in the mercy rule win with a six run first inning, chasing Cougar starting pitcher Tyler Painter with two outs in the first. IWU added two runs each in the third and fourth innings before piling on five more in the fifth.

Tim Zeigler was the beneficiary of the run support. Zeigler was the winning pitcher as he gave up three runs on seven hits in five innings. The junior walked two and struck out one.

In game two, Saint Francis took advantage of 10 unearned runs to avoid the four game weekend sweep.

Saint Francis (7-17, 1-3 MCC) scored seven runs in the third inning and added four more in the fourth to build an 11-2 lead en route to the victory. IWU starting pitch Sam Lewis allowed 11 runs - one earned - in five innings of work and Indiana Wesleyan committed two errors in the game.

Rightfielder Derek Freds highlighted the game for Indiana Wesleyan with two home runs. He finished 2-for-4 at the dish with three RBI.

Indiana Wesleyan remains on the road in Mid-Central College Conference play with a doubleheader at Marian (Ind.) University on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Indianapolis, Indiana.
