IWU Baseball Sweeps Siena Heights

MARION, Ind. - Indiana Wesleyan University baseball swept Siena Heights (Mich.) University in a home-opening doubleheader by scores of 7-0 and 14-11 on Thursday afternoon at Wildcat Field.

In the first game, the Wildcats plated four runs in the second inning, one in the third inning, and two more in the fourth inning to jump out to a big lead. IWU centerfielder CJ Sandmann went 2-for-2 with two runs scored to spark the Wildcats' offense. Catcher Alex Ridlen went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in while rightfielder Derek Freds recorded two RBIs.

Indiana Wesleyan sophomore starting pitcher Sam Lewis threw six strong innings to record the win, allowing only four hits and three walks while striking out six Saints. Junior Dan Bruckner pitched the final inning and did not allow a baserunner.

The nightcap saw an offensive explosion as the teams combined for 25 runs on 30 hits as the Wildcats escaped with a 14-11 victory. It seemed as though IWU would pull away with a win as they used a four-run third inning to grab a 6-3 lead. However, the Saints scored six runs in the fifth inning for a 9-7 lead, only to see the Wildcats answer with seven runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth inning to regain the lead for good.

IWU junior second baseman Brice Davis went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and three runs batted in. Sophomore leftfielder Craig Dollens recorded three RBIs on 1-for-3 hitting with a double.

Indiana Wesleyan freshman Cody Jones started on the mound and lasted 4.1 innings, surrendering nine runs, seven earned, on 11 hits and two walks. Freshman Chris Tyler entered the game in the fifth inning to earn the win as he allowed two runs, both unearned, on three hits and no walks.

Indiana Wesleyan improves to 7-11 on the season, while Siena Heights falls to 3-9.

The Wildcats will continue their home stand on Friday as they take on Point Park (Pa.) University in a doubleheader at Wildcat Field at 1:00 p.m.
