PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Indiana Wesleyan University baseball finished Thursday with a doubleheader split with Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) University during the team's spring break trip in Phoenix, Arizona.
Indiana Wesleyan (5-9) earned the win in the first game 5-3 before falling 8-3 in the nightcap.
All but one of the eight runs in the first game were scored in the first inning. Olivet Nazarene led off with a three run top of the first before Indiana Wesleyan quickly responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Quinn Nofziger reached first to lead off the inning and stole second and third. CJ Sandmann singled home Nofziger and then he scored on Derek Freds triple. Brice Davis tied the game with a RBI groundout and Jonathan Bastian knocked in Peter Engle later in the inning for what would be the game-winning run.
The score remained 4-3 in favor of the Wildcats until the sixth inning. IWU earned an insurance run when Kyle Beachy singled home Davis for a 5-3 advantage and the final score.
In game two, the early innings again provided a majority of the scoring.
This time Indiana Wesleyan scored first in the top of the first inning with two runs. Craig Dollens unloaded a triple that chased home Alex Ridlen. Davis followed with a single that scored Dollens for the 2-0 first inning lead.
Olivet Nazarene answered with four runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-2 lead.
In the next half inning Indiana Wesleyan closed the deficit to one when Nofziger doubled home Bastian for a 4-3 game. But the bottom of the third brought four more runs for Olivet Nazarene for the 8-3 score.
