Box Score POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. -- No. 9-seed Indiana Wesleyan University men's basketball advances to the NAIA Division II National Quarterfinals for the fourth time in five years following an 84-63 trouncing of No. 8-seed Oregon Tech in the Round of 16 in Point Lookout, Missouri.
Following a First Round game which was a 95-92 shootout, Indiana Wesleyan showcased their defensive prowess with a high energy approach that wreaked havoc on Oregon Tech all game long.
"We matched up better with Oregon Tech today and that allowed us to play our style a lot more," said Indiana Wesleyan associate head coach Jeff Clark. "It was a high energy defensive effort today and we're really proud of our guys."
The Wildcats limited the Hustlin' Owls to just 32.3-percent (20 of 62) shooting and 29.6-percent (8 of 27) from 3-point range.
One of the key players for Indiana Wesleyan on both ends of the court today was sophomore guard George Jones IV. Jones IV marked the Oregon Tech leading scorer, and although he scored 28 points, he shot only 7-of-20 (35.0-percent) from the field.
"When George plays aggressive defensively it leads to him playing more aggressively on the offensive end as well," said Clark. "So we stuck him on their best player and it led to a nice day on the offensive side for George."
Jones IV led the balanced Wildcat offensive attack on Friday with 18 points on a perfect 8-of-8 shooting from the field.
Four other Wildcats joined Jones IV in double figures. Sophomore forward Patrick Hopkins added 17, sophomore guard Aaron Martin and junior guard Derrick Troyer each finished with 13 and freshman guard Jordan Weidner contributed 10. Hopkins would lead all players with nine rebounds and three assists.
Indiana Wesleyan also got big contributions today from senior forward Josh Williams. He added eight points and eight rebounds off the IWU bench.
The Wildcats had little trouble over the majority of the game. IWU built a 33-22 advantage and never let Oregon Tech make a game of it. The Wildcats led 42-30 at halftime and quickly pulled away in the second half.
Less than five minutes into the second half Indiana Wesleyan led by 18 points. Multiple times IWU pushed the lead to a game-high 23 points in cruising through the second half.
Indiana Wesleyan has advanced to the national quarterfinals all four times the program has reached the national tournament. In each tournament IWU has defeated a team from the Cascades Collegiate Conference in the Round of 16.
The Wildcats await their next opponent and will play the winner of No. 1-seed Walsh (Ohio) University and the unseeded host school College of the Ozarks (Mo.) The national quarterfinal game will be played at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday, March 12.
