DAYTON, Tenn. -- No. 11-ranked Madonna (Mich.) University scored five runs in the fourth inning to overcome the Indiana Wesleyan University baseball team 6-3 on Friday afternoon in the Tennessee Valley Tournament in Dayton, Tennessee.
Indiana Wesleyan (0-2) led earlier when freshman second baseman Josh Ellis singled home senior first baseman Kyle Beach from second.
The lead held until the fourth inning when Madonna (2-0) did most of their damage with five runs off IWU senior starter Jeremy Worrell. Highlighting the inning for Madonna was a 2-run home run and a two out, three run double that accounted for all the runs in the inning.
In the bottom half of the fourth, the Wildcats got two runs back to cut the deficit to 5-3. Sophomore leftfielder Craig Dollens knocked home senior rightfielder Derek Freds. Dollens later scored on a double play ball as the Wildcats trailed by just two.
The Crusaders responded in the next half inning with the final run of the game on a sac fly for a 6-3 score. The Wildcats were limited to just two hits over the final three innings and were unable to overcome the three run deficit.
Worrell was given the loss as he surrendered six runs in six innings of work. He struck out two and did not allow a walk.
Indiana Wesleyan had seven hits in the game by seven different players. Freds was 1-for-4 with a run and a steal while Dollens finished 1-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored.
Indiana Wesleyan will next play Asbury (Ky.) College on Saturday.
