Box Score RICHMOND, Ind. -- The fourth top-10 ranked team was the one that finally put a loss on the No. 1-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University men's basketball team.
No. 10-ranked IU-East (10-1) held of Indiana Wesleyan in the final seconds for a 79-76 final.
The Wildcats trailed 67-60 with five minutes remaining before storming back. But a 13-6 spurt by the Wildcats tied the score 73-73 with 42 seconds remaining. Senior guard Derrick Troyer hit an old fashion 3-point play to tie the game.
The Red Wolves quickly responded with a basket in the paint by Danny Saunders. A quick Troyer turnover led to a Jordan Weidner foul and two free throws for IUE. Marcus Isaac hit both for a 77-73 lead for the Red Wolves.
IWU junior guard George Jones IV connected on a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left to bring the score to 77-76. Indiana Wesleyan immediately fouled Saunders who missed both free throw attempts. IWU moved the ball down the floor but junior forward Patrick Hopkins shot was off the mark as IU-East collected the rebound with 1.9 seconds remaining.
Isaac sank both free throws for the 79-76 advantage. Indiana Wesleyan tried to heave a long pass down the court but it was batted away as Indiana-East dethroned the top ranked team in NAIA Division II.
IU-East was the fourth top-10 opponent this season for Indiana Wesleyan. IWU had previously defeated No. 4-ranked Bellevue (Neb.) University, No. 6-ranked Cornerstone (Mich.) University, and No. 4-ranked Grace (Ind.) College.
Indiana Wesleyan (9-1) dominated in the paint, outscoring IU-East 42-22 down low and out-rebounding the Red Wolves 49-37. But 18 Indiana Wesleyan turnovers turned into 26 points for IU-East. On the contrary, Indiana Wesleyan only managed six points off 11 IUE miscues.
Five Wildcats scored double figures on Wednesday, led by Jones IV with 15. Hopkins added 13 points, junior guard Aaron Martin chipped in 12, sophomore forward Parker Stouffer earned 11, and Troyer finished with 10 points and seven assists.
Indiana Wesleyan returns to action at 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 10 with a road game at Shawnee State (Ohio) University in Portsmouth, Ohio.
