Box Score MARION, Ind. -- Senior guard Aaron Martin hit six straight 3-pointers as No. 2-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University men's basketball dominated visiting Union (Ky.) College in a 94-70 victory tonight in Luckey Arena.
Martin hit his first two field goal attempts and followed with six straight 3-point bombs. By the time Martin hit his sixth shot from deep, he had 22 points while Union had just 23.
"We've seen Aaron do that before so it's not a surprise to us," said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Greg Tonagel. "He works really hard. And you know what, none of them were bad shots. He went 6-for-9 and didn't take a bad shot. That's hard to do because sometimes guys will start forcing and he never did that."
Martin finished with a game-high 22 points, all in the first half, on 8-of-13 shooting.
With 14 minutes to play in the first half the score was tied 11-11. Then the Wildcats simply took over. Over the next 10 minutes IWU outscored the Bulldogs (0-4) 38-12 to take a commanding 49-23 lead.
Indiana Wesleyan (3-0) built a 56-33 lead at halftime after shooting 58.8-percent (20 of 34) in the half and 56.3-percent (9 of 16) from 3-point range.
"We sure came out with some explosive offense and spread it around," added Tonagel. "Aaron Martin obviously hit six threes but we were going inside-out, guys were finding shots, and I thought the ball was moving well."
The huge lead allowed Tonagel to get all 13 players big minutes as each player saw the floor for at least eight minutes.
Indiana Wesleyan saw positive production from its freshmen class. Guard Zac Vandewater earned the most minutes with 23 which resulted in 10 points. Forward Tyler Greathouse added 11 points and he was 3-of-7 from deep while point guard DJ Bettinger contributed five points in 16 minutes. Bettinger dished out four assists without committing a turnover.
"This was a great experience for all of our freshmen," continued Tonagel. "Zac Vandewater led us in minutes. These freshmen are growing up quickly and we were definitely depending upon on them, and will be come conference, so today was a valuable experience for them."
Junior forward Patrick Hopkins totaled 13 points for IWU and sophomore guard Jordan Weidner added 10. Union senior guard Brent Cork led the Bulldogs with 18 points and seven rebounds.
Indiana Wesleyan will next host the MCC/WHAC Challenge this weekend. Joining IWU in the challenge will be Spring Arbor (Mich.) University from the Mid-Central College Conference while No. 6-ranked Cornerstone (Mich.) University and Aquinas (Mich.) College will represent the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference.
Indiana Wesleyan will play Cornerstone, the defending NAIA DII national champions, at 8 p.m. on Friday, November 11 and then play Aquinas at 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 12.
