WINONA LAKE, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University baseball split their first two games at the NCCAA Midwest Regional Tournament on Friday at Miller Field in Winona Lake, Indiana.
Indiana Wesleyan won the opener of the four-team, double elimination tournament over Cedarville (Ohio) University by a 9-4 score.
The Wildcats turned a 2-1 deficit into a 6-2 advantage with two runs in the third and three more in the fourth. IWU put the game in the win column with a three run sixth inning for the eventual 9-4 victory.
Centerfielder Quinn Nofziger was 3-for-3 at the plate with three doubles and three runs scored. Designated hitter TJ Fletcher had a triple and scored twice while rightfielder Derek Freds was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Third baseman Jonathan Bastian finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored.
Jordan Vannoy went the distance on the mound for the Wildcats in earning the win. In seven innings of work Vannoy allowed four runs on 10 hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out two.
In the final game on Friday, Indiana Wesleyan had a chance to head to the championship game against Spring Arbor (Mich.) University but lost 21-2 in five innings.
Freds singled home Fletcher and Nofziger in the third inning for the Wildcats' only runs.
Indiana Wesleyan and Cedarville will play a second time on Saturday with a chance to play Spring Arbor in the regional finals. That game will be played at 10 a.m.
If Indiana Wesleyan defeats Cedarville, IWU will advance to play Spring Arbor in the regional final at 1 p.m. Indiana Wesleyan would have to beat Spring Arbor twice with the ?if necessary' game following immediately after the first game.
