MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University baseball turned a close game late into a 15-5 victory over Taylor (Ind.) University to advance to the Mid-Central College Conference Tournament championship on Wednesday afternoon.
Indiana Wesleyan will look to extract some revenge on Huntington (Ind.) University in the championship as the Foresters are the only team to defeat Indiana Wesleyan in the conference tournament. IWU will need to win two against Huntington while HU needs just one win for the conference championship and the automatic berth to the NAIA National Championship.
The Wildcats looked to put away the Trojans early with a 7-1 lead after five innings.
But the Trojans added a four spot in the top of the seventh for a 7-5 ballgame. Relief pitcher Sam Lewis came in for relief of starting pitcher Michael Caley and promptly left the tying run on first base.
Lewis once again got out of trouble in the eighth inning as Taylor put the tying run on base. But the inning came to a close on a force out at second base.
The bottom of the eighth inning saw the flood gates open, not in rain showers but eight Wildcat runs on 10 hits from eight different players. The end result was a 15-5 IWU win.
All nine starters for Indiana Wesleyan had a hit in the game and eight of them also had an RBI. The only Wildcat not to knock a run in was centerfielder Quinn Nofziger who happened to finish 2-for-3 with two walks and three runs scored.
Designated hitter TJ Fletcher wrapped out four hits with three runs on Tuesday while third baseman Jonathan Bastian added three hits and one RBI.
Caley was the winning pitcher as he gave up five runs on 10 hits in 6-2/3 innings pitched. Caley held the potent Trojan offense to a single run in the first six innings. Lewis finished with his first collegiate save as he did not allow a run in 2-1/3 innings of work.
Indiana Wesleyan has now won 12 of its last 15 games to push their record to 26-34 on the season.
