MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University baseball avenged a pair of losses to Huntington (Ind.) University on Thursday with a pair of victories against HU at Wildcat Field on Saturday.
The Wildcats won the doubleheader by scores of 4-2 and 5-4 to improve to 16-31 this season and 6-12 in the Mid-Central College Conference. Huntington falls to 19-19 overall and 10-10 in conference action.
In the first game, Huntington looked to break the game open early after two runs in the first inning off Indiana Wesleyan starting pitcher Jeremy Worrell. Worrell then retired the first two batters in the second inning but Huntington would load the bases before first baseman Andrew Drummond grounded out to first to end the threat.
After the second inning Worrell took complete control and would not allow another run. He finished with a complete game and allowed two runs on five hits and three walks. Worrell struck out six in 92 pitches on the day.
Designated hitter Peter Engle led off the Wildcat third inning with a walk. He stole second and advanced to third base on a balk. Centerfielder Quinn Nofziger singled to center to score Engle as IWU cut the deficit to 2-1. Nofziger stole second base and later scored on a two out RBI single from shortstop Ben Zachary as the game was tied 2-2 after three innings.
Engle singled in the fifth inning to once again open an inning. Nofziger singled and both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by leftfielder CJ Sandmann. Zachary came through for the second time with two outs with a single that scored both Engle, the winning run, and Sandmann as IWU led 4-2.
Worrell finished the game with a 1-2-3 seventh inning to earn the complete game victory.
Zachary ended the game 2-for-3 with three RBI and Nofziger was 2-for-3 with two runs, one RBI and one stolen base. Engle scored twice and rightfielder Derek Freds stole two bases.
Indiana Wesleyan never trailed in game two en route to the 5-4 win and the doubleheader sweep.
The Wildcats opened the scoring with a two run second inning on five hits.
Third baseman Jonathan Bastian singled home second baseman Brice Davis for the contest's first run. Nofziger followed with a bunt that loaded the bases which was followed by a RBI single by Sandmann for the 2-0 IWU lead.
Huntington scored in the top of third inning to cut the lead to 2-1 but Indiana Wesleyan quickly got that run back in the bottom of the third. First baseman Jordan Baker hit a RBI fielder's choice with the bases loaded as Indiana Wesleyan led 3-1 but IWU could add no more and left the bases loaded to end the inning.
The Wildcats added to their lead in the fifth inning. Zachary and Davis led the inning off with back-to-back singles. Both runners advanced on a sac bunt by Baker and Zachary eventually scored on a sac fly by Bastian for a 4-1 IWU advantage.
Three walks and two hits created a two run sixth inning for Huntington to narrow the gap to 4-3. Huntington missed a golden opportunity as they left the bases loaded following a nice grab off a line drive up the middle by IWU starting pitcher Sam Lewis to end the threat.
Indiana Wesleyan added what would be a very important insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sandmann doubled down the left field line to start the inning and advanced to third on a single by designated hitter Alex Ridlen. Zachary hit a sac fly to right centerfield to easily score Sandmann for a 5-3 Indiana Wesleyan lead.
Nofziger came in to pitch the seventh for Indiana Wesleyan in a save opportunity.
After the leadoff batter grounded out for Huntington, the next two batters singled to set up first and third. Leftfielder Eric Harpring, the tying run on first base, then stole second base. A walk loaded the bases for Huntington with the bottom of the order due up.
Jared Hammel hit a potential double play ball to end the game but Indiana Wesleyan was only able to get the out at second base. Indiana Wesleyan now led 5-4 with two outs and the tying run just 90 feet away.
Second baseman Chris Menzie then hit a ball up the middle which was stopped by Davis who was able to flip the ball to Zachary for a force out to end the game and give Indiana Wesleyan the sweep.
Davis hit 3-for-4 in the game with one RBI while Bastian ended 1-for-1 with a walk and two RBI. Sandman was 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored.
Sam Lewis was the winning pitcher as he allowed four runs on nine hits in six innings of work.
Indiana Wesleyan will next play host to Goshen (Ind.) College at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 27 at Wildcat Field.
