MARION, Ind. -- A five-run seventh inning propelled Taylor (Ind.) University to a 7-4 victory over Indiana Wesleyan University on Tuesday night at Wildcat Field.
The single nine-inning game was a non-conference game and was Grant County Little League Night.
Taylor trailed throughout much of the game until a five run seventh inning put the Trojans in the lead for good. Starting pitcher Jeremy Worrell was solid in 6-1/3 innings of work but was chased in the seventh.
Worrell finished with five runs - three earned - no walks and three strikeouts.
"Jeremy threw a great game and gave us everything we needed," said Indiana Wesleyan head coach Chad Newhard. "He got us deep into the game and gave us a chance to win. Jeremy gave everything and more tonight."
Rightfielder CJ Sandmann singled home second baseman Derek Freds in the second inning for a 1-0 Indiana Wesleyan lead. In the following inning, catcher Alex Ridlen led off the inning with a double. Courtesy runner Tim Zeigler would eventually score on a sac fly from shortstop Ben Zachary for the 2-0 lead.
Taylor (26-9) finally cracked the scoreboard in the fifth inning.
First baseman Ryne Otis was hit by a pitch to open the inning and later scored on a single to right field by second baseman Michael Nassar.
The Wildcat held on to the slim 2-1 lead into the seventh inning. Shortstop Michael Kraynak started the inning for Taylor with an infield single. Otis followed with a slow ground ball up the third base line that Worrell threw into right field over the glove of first baseman Kyle Beachy. Pinch runner Wade Rychener scored from first base as Otis advanced all the way to third for a 2-2 game.
After a strikeout, Nassar singled to center to chase home Otis for the first Trojan lead of the night at 3-2. Centerfielder Nate Hillery laid down a bunt on the next at bat and third baseman Jonathan Bastian would throw wide of the bag as the Trojans had runners on first and second as Worrell's day was through.
Michael Caley came in to pitch for the Wildcats in relief and the first batter he faced was third baseman Derek Kinzer who tripled to right center field, scoring a pair of runs for a 5-2 advantage. With two outs, Kinzer scored on a wild pitch to wrap up the five run TU inning.
"Kinzer's triple really killed us and it was their only extra base hit all game," added Newhard. "It was a big blow and the error didn't help either. A couple plays could have been the difference in the game."
Indiana Wesleyan (11-26) got one run back in the bottom of the seventh inning. Centerfielder Quinn Nofziger singled to center to lead off the inning and then stole second. Nofziger advanced to third on a Beachy single and scored on a double steal as IWU trailed 6-3 after seven.
Taylor scored in the top of the eighth on a wild pitch which Indiana Wesleyan got back in the bottom of the inning courtesy of a Taylor wild pitch to complete the scoring at 7-4.
Newhard said, "Offensively I think we did all right tonight. We ran the bases really well, probably the best we have all year."
Indiana Wesleyan, which ranks 19th in NAIA in steal attempts per game, swiped eight bases in eight attempts. IWU now has 85 stolen bases on the season.
The Wildcats return to Mid-Central College Conference action on Thursday at Wildcat Field against Grace (Ind.) College. First pitch will be at 4 p.m.
