MASON, Ohio -- Indiana Wesleyan University baseball allowed just two runs in 22 innings to bring home a doubleheader sweep over Concordia (Mich.) University on Saturday at Prasco Park's Legacy Field in Mason, Ohio.
Wildcat pitching scattered just 10 Cardinal hits -- all singles -- in 22 innings as IWU won a marathon first game 2-1 in 15 innings and finished the day with a 3-1 victory.
Indiana Wesleyan (10-16) used just three pitchers in the two games.
Sophomore starting pitcher Tim Zeigler went the first 11 innings for the Wildcats in the opener. He allowed a first inning run before shutting down Concordia over the next 10 innings of work. Zeigler's line ended with one run on four hits and three walks with 13 strikeouts.
Sophomore reliever Ryne Brown followed Zeigler and pitched four scoreless innings to collect the win in relief. Brown gave up three hits and had one strikeout to earn his first collegiate victory.
IWU junior second baseman Derek Freds would tie the score 1-1 in the fourth inning with a sac fly to chase home junior first baseman Kyle Beachy. From there, neither team would score for the next 10 innings until the bottom of the 15th.
Sophomore centerfielder CJ Sandmann singled with one out for the first Wildcat base runner in the inning. Sophomore catcher Alex Ridlen followed with his fourth hit of the game as Sandmann raced to third base. Beachy was intentionally walked to load the bases for senior shortstop Ben Zachary.
Zachary drove the ball to right field which allowed Sandmann to scamper home for the winning run and bring a close to the longest game played at Prasco Park.
Ridlen reached five times in the game with a 4-for-6 performance and a walk. Sandmann was the only other Indiana Wesleyan player besides Ridlen with multiple hits as he was 3-for-7.
Sandmann also stole two of the five bases in the game for IWU.
Game two was a much quicker affair as it lasted the regulation seven innings.
Concordia (11-12) struck first with a third inning run. Indiana Wesleyan would tie the game 1-1 in the fifth inning when a sac fly by sophomore third baseman Brice Davis scored Freds.
In the sixth inning, senior leftfielder TJ Fletcher and Sandmann both reached base to open the frame. Ridlen laid down an excellent sac bunt to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Beachy was intentionally walked to load the bases but Zachary once again was clutch and singled home two runs for the eventual 3-1 win.
Zachary finished Saturday with only two hits but both were game-winners.
Fletcher was 2-for-2 with a walk, a run and a stolen base while Freds finished 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.
Junior starting pitcher Jonathan Bastian pitched a complete game. He allowed a single run on three hits with two walks and seven punch outs. The win evens his record at 1-1 this season.
Besides the outstanding pitching performance for Indiana Wesleyan, the Wildcats were stellar defensively. Indiana Wesleyan committed one error all day long which just happened to be an errant throw on a pickoff attempt in the second inning of the first game.
One reason the Wildcats finished with only one error was the glove work of Beachy at first base. He countlessly picked throws in the ground at first base to erase possible errors.
Indiana Wesleyan will remain on the road for their next doubleheader at Madonna (Mich.) University on Tuesday, March 30. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Livonia, Michigan.
